Video: President Obama Delivers a Statement on Connecticut Shootings

by: lowkell

Fri Dec 14, 2012 at 15:16:08 PM EST

I grew up and went to elementary school in Newington (not Newtown, but close enough) Connecticut, also have family and friends who still live there. So this insanity really hits close to home. Just thinking about these kids and their families' pain - during what's supposed to be a joyous time of year, no less - makes me ill. It's at times like these that I hope there's a hell, and that the murderer is in its lowest level.

The bottom line from a policy perspective: as a society, we are letting this type of thing happen, over and over again, and we're not even capable of having a reasonable debate (e.g., see this) on the issue. That's not the sign of a healthy civilization, to put it mildly.

UPDATE: An emotional, heartbroken President Obama says, "As a country we have been through this too many times. We're going to have to come together to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics."

Tim Kaine statement on Newtown, Connecticut shootings (0.00 / 0)
Richmond, VA - Tim Kaine released the following statement regarding today's tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

"Words fail to express the profound sadness I feel for the families of those who were lost and those who will carry the scars of this tragedy. Our Commonwealth knows too well the pain of senseless gun violence. Like all Virginians, Anne and I offer our thoughts, prayers, and heartfelt condolences to the community of Newtown."

Rep. Jim Moran statement on Newtown, Connecticut shootings (0.00 / 0)
Washington, DC - Congressman Jim Moran, Northern Virginia Democrat, issued the following statement regarding the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

"As our country struggles to comprehend what occurred today in Newtown, CT, my deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of those killed in this mindless tragedy.  As a nation, we are again confronted with an act of terrifying mass gun violence.  While the coming days should be reserved for grieving, as a legislative body, and as a people, we must consider what can be done to improve our laws to prevent the continuation of this horrific trend."

Bob McDonnell statement on Newtown shootings (0.00 / 0)
RICHMOND-Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement following news of a shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

"It is with a heavy heart and the deepest of sympathies that I learned earlier today of the horrific shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those impacted by the events transpiring today, and to the teachers, emergency responders, and all others touched by this tragedy. Unfortunately, Virginia has our own painful memories of the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007. Those memories will never fade, and we continue to grieve for all those lost on that April day. We are all too aware of the impact that events like this can have on a community. If there is anything Virginia can do to assist Governor Malloy and the citizens of Connecticut, we stand ready to do so."

Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Statement: "'Thoughts and Prayers'" Are Not Enough" (0.00 / 0)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS" ARE NOT ENOUGH

Washington, DC-We can only imagine the scale of the human tragedy that has unfolded in Newtown, Connecticut as reports continue to emerge about the massacre committed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. There are many parents, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, and others who will now never see their loved ones again, never again know the warmth of their presence, never see their potential realized over the course of their natural lives. While shockingly familiar, the nature of this tragedy has left those of us at the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence feeling shaken to our core, physically and spiritually sick that this could happen in a civilized society in a place of learning for children.

Our elected leaders, in the coming hours, will issue the typical platitudes to those who have seen their loved ones gunned down in cold blood, telling them, "Our thoughts and prayers with you." Then, if the pattern holds, they will immediately retreat into silence and refuse to engage in any meaningful debate about America's catastrophically flawed gun laws, which directly facilitate one gun massacre after the next.

To people of conscience, this should not be acceptable. After today's horror, Americans must demand immediate action by our President and Congress to reform our gun laws. This must include legislation requiring background checks on all gun sales, strengthening those background checks (particularly in terms of mental health and substance abuse screening), and renewing the ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. We expect President Obama-as a man who has seen first-hand the devastation that gun violence inflicts on families and communities during his time as a volunteer in Chicago-to be a leader in this process and to speak out boldly and directly.

If we've reached a point where our children cannot attend school without fear of being gunned down by a homicidal maniac who has obtained easy access to firearms, then the freedom we cherish as citizens of the world's greatest democracy is at risk of extinction.

More than a dozen children were massacred in a kindergarten classroom today. If elected officials cannot find their voices now and call for change-if NRA campaign contributions and threats continue to dictate their decision-making, taking priority over the preservation of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness-what will it say about them?

Moreover, if we allow them to remain silent, what will it say about us?

Every politician who accepts contributions from the NRA and receives an "A" rating from that organization needs to go to Connecticut today, and explain to those parents how important it is that there be no restrictions on gun manufacturing, purchases or ownership.

Terry McAuliffe statement: "thoughts and prayers" (0.00 / 0)
Democratic candidate for governor Terry McAuliffe and his wife Dorothy issued the following statement on the shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Friday:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of those caught in the horrible tragedy in Newtown.  As parents of five children we can't imagine the pain and heartache of losing a child, especially to a terrible act of violence like this one.  We solemnly join our fellow Virginians and all Americans in mourning for the entire Newtown community."

Mark Warner statement: more "praying" (0.00 / 0)
Just a thought, but last I checked, we didn't elect Mark Warner or any of these folks in Congress to pray for us, or to be our rabbis or ministers. Last I checked, we elected them to LEGISLATE. What a concept, huh?
My thoughts are with the Sandy Hook Elementary School students, teachers, their families and the first-responders who are dealing with this horrific tragedy. Virginians know too well how devastating a trauma like this can be, and that recovering and moving forward will take time. We're praying for all those in Newtown and across Connecticut.

Today (0.00 / 0)
Today, I drove my husband to a doctor's appointment in Roanoke. While taking a shuttle from the parking garage to the clinic, we were in a van with a driver and two others. After briefly talking about the horror, a woman in back said, "Well, maybe now they'll let the teachers be armed." The driver agreed with her.

I simply said, "Maybe now we can look at eliminating semi-automatic weapons being sold to just anybody, often without a background check because people order over the Internet or buy at gun shows." The other two looked at me like I was crazy.

That's the attitude that keeps reasonable gun regulation from being adopted. Hell, even in the old West, in places like Dodge City and Deadwood, the sheriffs made people check their guns at his office to prevent violence. But, too many Americans believe that there were gun fights in the streets of those towns all the time, and the armed good guys always won.

I taught for thirty-one years. Believe me, had anyone entered my classroom with intent to kill, my first instinct as a teacher and a mother myself would have been to try to protect the kids and get them out of harm's way, not pull out my handy Glock and see if my reflexes were faster that the perp...

Video: Definitive proof that Mike Huckabee is bonkers (0.00 / 0)

Absurd... (0.00 / 0)
So, according to Wacky Huckabee, the fact that Christianity is no longer forcibly practiced in public schools in the form of Bible readings and prayers over the intercom (directly opposed to Christ's injunction against public prayer) led to the insanity that caused a man to kill his mother and proceed to kill the children in his mother's classroom???

Huckabee said God wasn't there armed and dangerous, but God will be there in the love we show one another. I'll bet God would love it if we made sure it was very difficult for the insane to get semi-automatic weapons. That would be the love of God in action, for sure.

Huckabee and his ilk are utterly deranged. (0.00 / 0)
Not sure what else to say about anyone who could think such thoughts, say such things.  Oh, they're also evil.
