More substantively, his hypocrisy and inconsistency know no bounds. For instance, where was McCain calling for a "Watergate-style hearing" in the aftermath of the horrendous, disastrous Beirut Marine barracks bombing in 1983? Oh, right, Ronald Reagan was president then, and Democrats certainly didn't stoop to McCain's level of wildly casting aspersions. Second, where was McCain during the leadup to the Iraq War, with supposed uranium in Niger, Saddam connections to 9/11, etc, etc?  And where was McCain when our occupation of Iraq turned disastrous, clearly because we went in with insufficient forces for the occupation, also without a plan to deal with any insurgents, "dead enders," Sunni-Shiite hostilities, etc?  Oh yeah, again, a Republican was in the White House so McCain was silent. And now that a Democrat is in the White House, the same Democrat who BEAT McCain in 2008 for president? Whoa, Nellie, bar the door, John McCain is OUTRAGED I say! Whatever, just ignore this foaming-at-the-mouth wacko at this point. Oh, and GET OFF HIS LAWN!!! LOL

As I've written before, McCain's various self-reinventions as a politician are best understood as acts of sore loser-dom. A decade ago, for instance, he took up a sudden interest in closing the gun show loophole, enacting a patients' bill of rights, and stopping tax cuts for the wealthy. Not at all coincidentally, this came just after he'd lost a bruising campaign against George W. Bush. Bush and his team had been rough - very, very rough - on McCain, and McCain had deemed them unworthy victors. His sudden cooperation with Democrats in 2001 was his version of payback, giving the new Bush White House fits.

When he lost to Obama in 2008, McCain shifted in the other direction, becoming a more reliable Republican vote in the Senate and playing a leading role in the right's attacks on the new president. At a 2010 White House summit on healthcare, McCain communicated something approaching contempt for Obama, and he threw himself into Romney's campaign against the president this year. Nor is he giving up in the wake of the election. Along with Lindsey Graham, McCain is now the GOP's point-man for going after U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice over the Benghazi incident. This week, McCain vowed to filibuster her nomination if Obama chooses her to run the State Department, a threat that prompted an unusually heated response from Obama at his Wednesday press conference.

"When they go after the U.N. ambassador," Obama said of McCain and Graham, "apparently because they think she's an easy target, then they've got a problem with me."

Obviously, McCain got under the president's skin, which surely makes him happy. But this is probably short-sighted. For years, McCain was one of the most popular politicians in the country. His reputation took a hit in '08, but he had an opportunity to restore it in defeat. Instead, he's behaved like an embittered partisan warrior. And so far, it's an example that Romney and Ryan are following.

Cranky, petulant John McCain is so, so mad about Benghazi these days. He is just furious at the Obama administration for ... something. (For being the Obama administration, instead of the McCain administration.) And he cannot stop going on TV and complaining about how Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice blamed a "flash mob" for the attack on the American consulate, when in fact it was a terror attack, by terrorists. He is so busy going on TV and saying that, and demanding "Watergate hearings" into the thing Rice said, that he didn't have time to read any news articles that explain that he is just wrong about what Rice said.

Petulant loser John McCain and his reviled sidekick Lindsey Graham are considered two of the United States Senate's wisest foreign policy experts, because both of them love war. Graham will be on "Meet the Press" this Sunday, McCain will probably be on one of the other ones.

which places this most recent McCain rant in even more self-serving context.  It's not just the microphone McCain seeks.  It's not just him fighting the current of his own distemper and irrelevancy.  Because of term limits he will lose his seat on the Armed Services Committee.  (Is this great news or what?!) Apparently in a bid to ward off his own fading into the woodwork, McCain wretched and spewed out the nasty stuff about Dr. Rice to get him a position, preferably chairperson, on a yet-to-be formed Select Committee to Investigate--SOMETHING.  Pathetic, really pathetic.

From 2008...Rice called McCain "confused," said he had a "lack of understanding and lack of strategic depth," etc. Something tells me McCain hasn't forgotten that. Of course, this is politics at the highest level, and if you hold a grudge against everyone who's ever said a bad thing about you, as McCain apparently does, I hate to think of what your blood pressure's going to look like.
