Here are a few Virginia (and national) news headlines, political and otherwise, for Tuesday, November 13.

*Top US commander in Afghanistan investigated, Petraeus scandal widens
*Cantor's knowledge of Petraeus allegations detailed
*George Allen rules out future campaigns for political office
*New 14-mile toll lanes to open on Capital Beltway in Va.
*Warner wins in Virginia without votes
*Baliles still leads Tyler in final vote tally
*State Sen. Miller's legislative files subpoenaed in FBI investigation
*Virginia Tribes Still Struggle for Recognition
*Virginia GOP's gubernatorial woes (I have never said anything nice about Republican sycophant Jennifer Rubin before, and I probably never will again, but believe it or not she nails it in this column about Bolling and Cuccinelli. Will wonders never cease?)
*Long lines reignite push for early voting in Va.
*Some observations on election results in Roanoke
*Next up for tolls: Interstate 64?
*Virginia has high hopes for HOT lanes on the Beltway
*Weather: Temperatures dropping into the 40s
*Virginia gets ready to rumble ("WWE troop tribute to air from Norfolk")
*Arlington forges ahead with Route 1 streetcar line (Good!)
*Harper raises the bar, then clears it (Congratulations to Bryce Harper on being named NL Rookie of the Year - a well deserved honor!)

If we push for early voting, we need better election administration. The Fairfax Registrar was not finished counting all the absentee ballots, which include all in person absentees, until early Monday Morning (at least that is when they posted the results). Election administration is vastly underfunded and understaffed.

Hopefully Senator Howell's bill will include provisions for actually providing state funding or policies to ensure that early voting is run effectively. Taking almost a week to count absentee ballots is unacceptable.

Streetcar without increasing density (0.00 / 0)
is only going to increase housing costs in an area with a lot of lower income families. Affordable housing for people like this should be job #1 for any progressive. What's public transit if no one can afford to live in Arlington unless they are wealthy, young and living with multiple roommates, or qualifying for affordable housing? What about the middle?

I admit that I'm describing my own family's situation on Columbia Pike. We don't make enough to move to a more gentrified area and, since I live in DC, would prefer not to move further out.

We need more housing density. Now.

And yes, I know they want more "affordable units" (0.00 / 0)
but those sort of units in Arlington are, typically, for those making 60k and under as a family. Median income in Arl is in the 90k range. Like I said, what about the middle?

Cantor (0.00 / 0)
Does anyone know why Cantor injected himself into the Petraeus scandal? It seems the FBI person contacting congressmen was doing so because he thought the FBI pace of investigation was moving too slow. It would be hard to believe that the head of the FBI didn't know there was something going on with the CIA chief and it wasn't necessary for Cantor or his minion to contact the FBI. Even if they did make contact with the FBI why was it necessary to make it known he knew something? Especially after the fact. Probably tooting his own horn so to the speak. Hey, I know something you don't.
