Virginia News Headlines: Sunday Morning

by: lowkell

Sun Feb 26, 2012 at 07:34:32 AM EST

Here are a few Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Sunday, February 26.

*Jeff E. Schapiro: McDonnell faces new test on Virginia budget
*Kaine: 'I'll do what I think is right'
*McDonnell's national spotlight turns harsh amid abortion debate
*Tech families want 1-gun-a-month law to stay
*Pro-life advocates upset after VA Senate tables personhood legislation
*Bob McDonnell: Mitt Romney has a 'CEO' problem
*Virginia governor walks fine line with conservative General Assembly
*State Senate Democrats Playing With Fire (Love it; when Democrats fight back against Republicans' seizing total control of the States Senate - despite that chamber being tied, 20-20 - it's "playing with fire." That's right, Democrats, just sit there and take it like good victims. Not!)
*Governors Convene In D.C. For NGA Winter Meeting
*Battle rages in South Norfolk against economy, crime
*Fairfax weighs meal tax to pay for roads

South Norfolk (0.00 / 0)
The headline seems rather misleading, since it sounds like the residents of South Norfolk are battling the City Council more than anything. Not surprising; Chesapeake elects all its council members at-large, and I don't think any of the council live in South Norfolk, so they have no real representation on the council.

Incidentally, I've been by that Gateway at SoNo building; it's a ridiculously hamfisted attempt at gentrifying the area. Surrounding the nice, new mixed-use development building are dilapidated old buildings. It sticks out like a sore thumb, and I'm not surprised that retailers haven't been willing to go into that space.

The Lynchburg News Advance is a 3rd rate excuse of a newspaper and a clone of the hard right Richmond Times Dispatch. It is located in the area of Virginia famous for Kathy "trans vaginal probe" Byron and Steve "poster boy for conflict of interest" Newman.  It is also the home of Liberty "intolerance is our motto" University.  It is a small wonder that they took this attitude.  My advice to those in central VA who really don't like this hard right drum beat is to drop their subscription to the paper.  It is declining in subscribers and financially fragile.  Perhaps it might go bust.  Not a bad thing, no paper is preferable to this rag.
