It's not just about unsafe oil platforms, just like it's not just about unsafe coal mines. It's about ending our addiction to dangerous, expensive, polluting fuels. I wonder if our elected officials have the guts to stand up. I know Jim Moran, Tom Perriello, Bobby Scott & Gerry Connolly do. I'm pretty sure Mark Warner & Barack Obama do. Not sure about Jim Webb. And I know Glenn Nye doesn't.

I just hope the American public will realize that - in the short run - the climate crisis means a change in lifestyle. We ALL are addicted to oil, to energy use being readily available for every trinket we want, for keeping our houses at a nice 72 all year round, for whatever we are sold in the latest TV ad.

and that is how the corporatists will try to sink any major changes.

Coal miners fear losing jobs, oil workers, refiners, pipeline owners, gas station owners, and on and on fear for their jobs and their businesses if we get really really serious about developing new industries, no matter what is said about thousands of new jobs in the alternative energy industries. The cost of government subsidies and research will be denied because we already have such a high deficit.

It is not going to be easy to sell any massive push seriously to turn sharply away from dirty energy, and Obama has to spend so much of his time on cleaning up Bush's messes that he has little time left to do the necessary job of defending health care reform (if he doesn't do that, he may lose Congress in November, and then nothing else of his programs will get done)---- much less, start a new battle for a serious energy policy and a real industrial policy.

It will take a thunderous popular demand for alternative energy, making it an issue in the elections, I am afraid, for us to have even the slightest hope of ending our dirty energy addiction.... and already the corporotists are mounting a pre-emptive strike against not only re-regulation but against any rival energy program.
