Could Kai Degner "Sneak Away" With An Upset Win Next Tuesday?

by: lowkell

Mon Jun 07, 2010 at 15:29:29 PM EDT

Could Harrisonburg Mayor Kai Degner "sneak away" with an upset victory next Tuesday, June 15, in a special election to replace Republican Matt Lohr, who resigned in March 2010 to serve as Commissioner for the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in the McDonnell Administration?  According to the Republicans themselves, yes Degner can! Here's what Degner's Republican opponent, Tony Wilt, has to say.
Subject: I Need Your Help!!! They think they have a chance to sneak away with a House of Delegates seat here in the solidly Republican Shenandoah Valley. They want one more Delegate to support the... agenda of Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid. ... we have no margin for error... Democrats are determined to take away this seat from our party.
For more on Wilt and his "family ties" to a controversial natural gas project, click here.  To "get on the bus" for Kai Degner this coming Saturday (June 12), click here. And help Degner "sneak away" with a victory in 8 days!

I wasn't aware (0.00 / 0)
that Virginia House of Delegates members also voted in the US House of Representatives as well as the US Senate.  Quite a powerful position for only making $16k a year.

Amazing, isn't it? (0.00 / 0)
That one House of Delegates seat will singlehandedly move forward the agenda of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Senate Majority Leader, and the President of the United States. I bet you never realized the House of Delegates was so powerful!!! (heh)

Wow (0.00 / 0)
What power for just a simple delegate...

What does that leave for POTUS to do?

If that's their messaging strategy, I actually BELIEVE it's close...... (0.00 / 0)
It doesn't work for Republicans to run against Obama/Reid/Pelosi even in actual Congressional campaigns.

Why do they think it will work in a Virginia House of Delegates special election?

I realize that was just a fundraising appeal, but even as a fundraising appeal it looks weak.  I don't remember state legislative candidates explicitly running against Bush a few years ago, and I would've rolled my eyes to get fundraising appeals by state legislative or local candidates attacking Bush.

I really hope the Republican here has completely screwed up his voter contact messaging like this.  We just might pull this out.  If we win this one, it will really make the Goopers pull their hair out.

Oh, and for my part, even as a political junkie, I had no idea there even WAS a special election for a Delegate seat until today!  That's how little attention this one got, and I hope local Democrats are on top of it.

As 2005 and 2007 showed (0.00 / 0)
I definitely think we picked up a lot of Dem votes, at least here in Fairfax, due to the Republican brand being so shitty.  But I don't remember any of our candidates saying "Jay O'Brian will support Bush policies, vote George Barker" or "send us money so we can stop Dick Black from helping President Bush".  I think it was pretty apparent that Republicans were doing a shit job and there was no need to go to lies to do so.  You would think that no one in their right mind would associate a House of Delegates member and this or any other administration, but then again, Republicans are right-wing, not right-minded.

Go Kai! (0.00 / 0)
This is a phenominal pick up opportunity! I met Kai five years ago just after his graduation from JMU. He did a brilliant presentation on his senior thesis which was an outstanding Google Earth-based analysis of pollution in the Shenandoah watershed. It's remarkable he's even a contender in this valley, the reddest part of Virginia. Kai is a real leader and after he wins this seat, in a few years I hope he takes on the corporate puppet Goodsplat!! (sorry Bob)
Go get em Kai!
