Susan Mariner Meets With Loudoun County Democrats

by: lowkell

Fri Jun 04, 2010 at 12:31:54 PM EDT

Yesterday, Susan Mariner once again demonstrated her work ethic and commitment to the Democratic Party by driving all the way from Virginia Beach to Leesburg to meet with the Loudoun County Democratic Committee and discuss her candidacy for DPVA 1st Vice Chair.

Well beyond this particular election, what Susan is committed to doing is listening to Democrats doing the hard work "on the ground."  That's why she's traveling around the Commonwealth, asking for people's thoughts, meeting with local elected officials and party leadership, and learning firsthand what's happening with the Democratic Party in key battleground counties like Loudoun.

Susan points out that many Democrats "downstate" tend to think of Loudoun as Northern Virginia, which to many people is synonymous with Fairfax County.  That, of course, is not the case.  And, Susan adds, it's important that the 1st Vice Chair have the time to commit to understanding and representing all of the state, not just one part.

Susan reports that last night, in speaking with the Loudoun County Democrats at their meeting, nobody could remember any members of the DPVA leadership attending any event other than a fundraiser. Having worked on campaigns professionally (Susan served as the general election Political Director in Hampton Roads for Barack Obama, also as an advisor on Senators John Miller's and Ralph Northam's tough Red to Blue election victories in 2007, etc), she understands numbers, campaign strategy, and tactics.  Even more importantly, perhaps, Susan also understands how critical it is for campaigns to listen to Democrats who know their communities and their voters better than any staffer.

Last but not least, Susan believes that a key aspect of the 1st Vice Chair should be to interface between the DPVA and statewide campaigns, which makes understanding the entirety of the state absolutely critical. Fortunately, when Susan is elected DPVA 1st Vice Chair in 8 days, we will not only have someone who understands Virginia and meets the other criteria cited above, we will have a committed, hard-working, dynamic, inclusive leader who takes the DPVA to another level of excellence. Go Susan!

Music to my ears (0.00 / 0)
I don't personally know anything about the other candidates in the race, but every time Susan Mariner speaks, I know I'm going to hear something worth listening to.  Wanting to connect between campaigns and the ordinary people we all know going about their lives in Virginia is, to me, the single most important thing on the ground parties can do.

Go Susan!!!!!

This seems to be a case of "what I will do" vs. "what I've been doing". (0.00 / 0)
Having carefully studied Susan's opponent's Facebook page and the specific things she had done since Susan's opponent got back into active participation in 2000 (Susan never left, BTW), the most significant difference I have discovered to this point is that one candidate says what she "will do" statewide (her resume of what she has done seems geographically very limited) and the other candidate (Susan) tells us in her resume what she already has done both professionally and as a volunteer (remember Webb Wagons and the many thousands of votes she secured for Webb during the 2006 primary and general election). But there is more to this comparison than just what one has done and the other says "I will do". Susan's opponent makes no mention of the importance of volunteer grass roots "boots on the ground" volunteers nor any mention of the importance of an effective Netroots operation nor if that would become a more significant, even integral, part of the DPVA strategy.

As points of comparison between the two candidates, perhaps the most crucial and telling elements of Susan's resume are her very strong belief in the grassroots and especially the Netroots aspects of what it takes to make Virginia Bluer. Susan also has a strong connection to the younger generation, e.g. Kyle Blankenship, and this has been an important part of why she has been instrumental in a major growth in the membership of VB Dem. Committee since she was elected chair this past January.

If you would read Susan's resume that can be found elsewhere on Lowell's blog, I think you will agree with me that Susan is the person we need RIGHT NOW as 1st Vice Chair for Organization. Organizing across the entire state is crucial to our success this year and the coming years, and Susan is the right person for that job. Please contact all the DPVA Central Committee voting members you know to ask them to vote for Susan.

I Will, I Have (0.00 / 0)
Susan has my vote, especially because she knows the importance of the DPVA maintaining lines of communication with local Democratic committees all across the state. Her emphasis on netroots and use of the Internet in campaigns is also vital. (The Deeds campaign got destroyed by the McDonnell campaign in that area.)

What has been lacking at the DPVA is the ability to assist organizing on the local level, exactly what was wrong with the national Democrats until the Obama campaign - and the Dean campaign before them, plus Howard Dean at the helm of the DNC - showed that the only ultimately winning strategy is a 50-state strategy. In the case of Virginia, that means fighting for votes all across the Commonwealth, not just in NOVA and Hampton Roads. A whole-state organizing strategy will mean majority status eventually for our party.

(I will never forget the frustration in my part of the state when we couldn't even get enough Deeds signs to cover all of our precincts on Election Day, as one small example of the mistakes that were made.)
