Catholic missionary in Honduras as a young man?  Oh wait, that's the other guy; Allen was busy doing crap like this.

Most noteworthy is Allen's youthful adoption, as a Palos Verdes, Calif., high school student, of the Confederate flag as a protest symbol. Allen "saw himself as disconnected from the culture in which he lived," Lizza writes. "He hated California and, while there, became obsessed with the supposed authenticity of rural life-or at least what he imagined it to be from episodes of 'Hee Haw,' his favorite TV show." According to his fellow students, Allen drove a red Mustang with a Confederate flag license plate on the front. ("I mean, it was absurd-looking in our neighborhood," says one.) Lizza also reports that Allen and his friends sprayed "racially tinged" graffiti on their high school on the day the "almost entirely white Palos Verde High" played a "mostly black inner-city school" in basketball. And in a high-school yearbook photo, "Seventeen-year-old George Allen is wearing a Confederate flag pin."

...as interpreted through the filter of "Hee Haw"?  How, um, flattering!

BTW, everybody should re-read Lizza's portrait of Allen.  It was, and remains, one of the most insightful, shocking and high impact political profiles I've ever read.  It was one of the key sources of evidence that led voters six years ago to realize that Allen's aw-shucks county persona was just a phony-baloney facade built up by a guy who's basically just an empty pair of cowboy boots.

G.A. in Palos Verdes (0.00 / 0)

My freshman roommate (1970-71) went to high school in Palos Verdes, and told me that story during our year in shared quarters. We lost touch over the decades, but got together for dinner in Denver in 2007, the year after G.A. lost to Jim Webb in his senate re-election bid. "Was this the same guy...?" I asked him, and he confirmed it was. I do hope he ends up collateral damage in this year's election.
