Warner Being Warner: Pandering, False Equivalence.

by: KathyinBlacksburg

Tue Aug 28, 2012 at 15:38:45 PM EDT

Please take a look at Mark Warner being Warner in a way that is just so hurtful to Dems this year.  Says he:
I think it's going to  be very close.  I know he's got problems in SW Virginia He's doing better in Eastern and Northern Virginia.

And I'll tell you this much, I'm supporting President Obama, but I also am awful tired of all the negative ads. I wish we wouldn't be spending  2 billion dollars on tv tearing each other down. That money could be used for interstate 81 and scholarships.  Hopefully, we'll get through this election like we've gotten through all the others and get back to solving our country's problems, especially the debt and deficit.

He just cannot seem to help himself.  He can't endorse the president without trying to distance himself at the same time. He can't talk about health care reform without saying there's a lot that needs to be fixed (in the Affordable Care Act).

His effort to create out of nothing a false equivalence between the two parties regarding negative ads is appalling. The GOP lie machine spins the lies faster than we can rebut them. But Warner pretends both parties are doing it. He also implies that it's "negative" to refute a pile of lies. I call it necessary. And there is nothing wrong with that. Such a false equivalence is cowardly, shameful, and self-serving. Lying down and playing dead will not work. And putting up only "positive" ads won't work either.

Along the way, Warner panders to Bristol Motor Speedway fans, coal, enemies of "ObamaCare," and Peter Peterson's "deficit" hawkeroos. (Hawkeroos are two-faced show-offs who like to prattle away at how spending conscious they are. But they won't make the rich pay their fair share. No, sir.)

What is really disconcerting is his self-adulating self-absorption. He is posturing every minute. Warner's myth of the "radical center" is really all about such posturing and it's also about trying to reinvent as virtuous all those things he doesn't stand for, but should, like enabling the EPA to keep our air and water clean. Or helping the 99% as opposed to the wealthy who don't need more tax cuts. It is as if he's out there saying, "Look at me.  I'm better than all of you. I am especially better than President Obama." (No, you are not, Mark.)

Additionally, in this video, he throws a bone to Medicare supporters, never mind that, because he supports a variation of the Simpson-Bowles budget, he has, through his earlier proposal, in mind to wreck havoc on Social Security, rendering it a program primarily for the poor and leaving the Middle Class high and dry.

I'm glad for his support of Medicare and that he doesn't plan to privatize Medicare.  But that's not enough. Far from it. Much earlier (than this video) his Gang of Six "plan," while raising some revenue still follows the absurd (at this point) tax-cut notion of "fixing" the economy by reducing revenue. Worst, by targeting Social Security, he pretends that Social Security has something to do with the deficit. He knows it does not. What he won't tell you is pols have borrowed from us seniors and they do not want to pay it back. Not to is theft from the American people (all of them, not just today's seniors.) All he needs to do leave the future fix to Social Security out of the 'deficit reduction effort.  Recommend that separately the ceiling on FICA taxes be removed. That alone would fix it. But, no....

Warner has been a crusader for conservative financial ideology, ignoring that serious deficit reduction in the coming year or two would push us into a greater recession. He also won't admit that stopping the Bush tax cuts would go a long way to fixing our deficit problems. So would scrubbing programs our military doesn't even want.

BTW, Mark knows that the money spent on the ads cannot literally be diverted to fix I81.  And no doubt he'd be spending lots of money on ads himself were he to run. He is so running in 2016. Even in a year when President Obama's race is far, far more important than his prospects some future year, he can't help but dig into the President.

I want to say something by way of contrast... (4.00 / 2)
A lot has been written about what caused the loss of Rick Boucher's seat.  In large measure, though, it was two things: Being dramatically outspent by corporate dollars and attack ads and 2) and more important, Rick Boucher was willing to sacrifice himself to elect Barack Obama president in 2008. There he was in an otherwise "red" district, putting himself on the line day after day in that district. He welcomed the president without equivocation, spared us the false equivalence, and ultimately lost his race two years later.  It was heroic.

There isn't enough of that kind of sacrifice in politics today. Pols care only about their own re-election. Most bloggers and a lot of Dems have criticized Boucher on some of his votes (health care in particular about which I had my own discouragement), but in my opinion, his putting himself on the line in 2008 was the most noble thing he (or ever did.  And it was the right thing.  I do not think Warner would never be so gallant. I'd love to be proved wrong. But it wouldn't take that much for Warner to stop inserting his distancings in his comments.  Why can't he do the right thing? Support the president. Support the 99%.  Stop the false equivalence. See, it isn't that hard.

Great Post (4.00 / 1)
Thanks for telling it like it is about Warner, Kathy. However, I really can't feel sorry for Boucher. He now enjoys a job shilling for corporate America as a lobbyist with the title of vice president of something or other and a million-dollar salary. On top of that he has his pension and access to health insurance as a federal retiree. I will give him credit for full support of President Obama and trying to get cap-and-trade through Congress, even though he got the bill changed at the behest of the coal moguls who pretended to support him still. But, along came Morgan Griffith, who was willing to sell his soul to "clean coal[sic]." Boucher was half-owned by coal. Morgan is a wholly-owned subsidiary.

I-81??? (4.00 / 1)
Thank you Kathy for pointing out the idiocy of Warner's I-81 comments.  In no way would the private funds I donated to Obama or Romney go to road maintenance.  Statements like that are how you can tell this is out and out pandering. Sad and pathetic.

kidding (3.00 / 2)
You blame the Republicans for not working with the Democrats then blast Warner for trying to work across party lines. This is alot of the problem we have in DC.

To what end? (4.00 / 1)
Working across party lines is great! Ending Medicare & giving seniors vouchers & a hearty "good luck" is terrible! These are not incompatible thoughts.

Partisan fights to protect what you really believe in are fights worth having. Barney Frank: "When [Barack Obama] said we shouldn't fight the fights of the '90s, I said, 'Well, what about abortion? Gay rights? Which one do you want me to give up?'"

I have never opposed working across the aisle. (4.00 / 2)
I do support it.  But you cannot compromise with take-no-prisoners no-compromise-ever radicals. For compromise to be a viable option there has to be genuine give-and-take, not one-sided capitulation.

There are 2 kinds of opposition (4.00 / 3)
In any political situation the out-of-power group, faction, or party is "in opposition." They are either the loyal opposition or---- the dis-loyal opposition. The loyal opposition is patriotic and co-operates in governing, hoping to make their case to be elected into power so they can become the government. Hence the term "her Majesty's loyal opposition."

Since the election of Clinton, indeed beginning after Reagan, the Republicans have become what can only be called the disloyal opposition, not interested in co-operating in governing, openly intending to make their case for being voted into power by totally obstructing the efforts of duly elected Democrats even to govern, as if they deny the legitimacy of the party actually in power. In no way can their conduct be considered patriotic. The conduct of Republicans is the source of the dysfunction of Congress. Combine this with their growing animosity toward the use and purpose of the federal government itself, and you have a posonous policy that destabilizes the system, and is anti-democratic.

One more thing (4.00 / 1)
It takes gall for you to call out any Democrat after the Party of No has obstructed even the fundamental functions of government, played brinksmanship, and basically sat on their hands while foaming hatred at the mouth.  Then they claim falsely that Obama is running a campaign of hate.  Or president has never done that,  and  any false claims he has will be troll- rated. There needs to be some places where lies are not tolerated. And a progressive blog is just such a place.  The MSM won't do it much at all.  A few "fact-checks" here and there, often using false equivalence.  And they give a pass.

I can't imagine any progressive supporting (4.00 / 1)
Mark Warner for the Democratic nomination in 2016, or ever for that matter. Of course, it's highly doubtful he gives a crap, as he clearly views the base of his party with the utmost contempt, scorn, etc. And to think I used to like this guy. I guess we all make big mistakes in life; for me, that was one of the biggest, at least in politics.

P.S. Can you even imagine a Republican politician constantly dissing conservatives and conservative values as Warner repeatedly does to progressives and progressive values? Zero chance of that, because Republican politicians know that conservatives would primary them and quite likely defeat them. That's what we need to do on the progressive side; until that time comes, unfortunately, we can expect this kind of garbage from the Mark Warners of the world. Barf.

If only we could all be as Very Serious as Mark Warner (4.00 / 1)
When Mark Warner comes around in 2016 asking for the Democratic presidential nomination, let's not forget this clip.

I sure hope he is not our candidate in 2016 I would feel like the (0.00 / 0)
republicans must feel about Romney

Good post (0.00 / 0)
He should be primaried from the left. A real primary. He'll win of course but we should make him sweat some. Otherwise he'll take us for granted because he can, as we'd still prefer him to Jim Gilmore or George Allen.

Perhaps the worst thing about Warner is how (4.00 / 1)
he completely accepts and uses Republican framing, even though it's complete and utter bull****. I mean, seriously, the way to create jobs is to reduce the debt (aka, "austerity")? Is that supposed to be a really bad joke, or does Warner actually AGREE with the Karl Rove SuperPAC and other Teahadist garbage that has ZERO basis in economics? Whatever the reason for him doing this crap, it's unacceptable and an automatic disqualifier for serious consideration by Democratic presidential primary voters in 2016.

There is another important issue here too (4.00 / 2)
In fact it may need a separate diary.  When our President is under fierce attack by hatemongers, racists, birthers, and McCarthy-like extremists questioning his patriotism, his citizenship, even his right to be here, he should have received strong support and backup from people like Mark.  Mark had nothing to lose.  But Warner supports with faint praise and then piles on.  He should have the president's back.  The fact that he didnt is a huge moral failure.

There's nothing in the middle of the road except yellow stripes and dead armadillos (Jim Hightower). PS I'm on Twitter here.

I very much look forward to your diary on this subject. (0.00 / 0)
It's an important one. Might want to throw Jim Webb in there too, by the way...haven't heard much from him, other than criticism come to think of it. #FAIL

R Before D (0.00 / 0)
Warner has consistently shown himself to be an "R" (as in Rich White Guy--what else?) before being a good "D" Democrat.

I know this is Virginia and all that, but can't a real, live Democrat win here? Is Warner the best we can do?

It's the best we can do IF nobody steps up to primary him. (0.00 / 0)
Hello? Any real Democrats out there with the cojones, ovaries, whatever to take on "his excellency?" (snark)
