Find out how Ken Cuccinelli's not just a tinfoil-hat, John Birch Society-style, extremist wackjob, he's also corrupt, in the The Continuing Chronicle of Ken Cuccinelli's Corruption. It really stinks!

Virginia News Headlines: Friday Morning

by: lowkell

Fri Aug 17, 2012 at 06:40:07 AM EDT

Here are a few Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Friday, August 17.

*NBC12 talks one on one with Romney (We'll have more on this later, but for now let me just say that this was one of the most pathetic, craven, godawfully egregious excuses for an "interview" I've ever seen. So, the purpose of a political "interview" is to just let the subject lie and lie and lie - all lies that have been debunked multiple times by PolitiFact and others, by the way - and never challenge him on anything?!? I mean, sure, standards for the Idiot Box are low, and for local "news" - if it bleeds it leads, etc. - even more so, but my god, this is appallingly bad...)
*Romney: I paid at least 13% tax rate for past decade (Two comments: 1) Prove it by releasing your tax returns going back 10 years, whatever; 2) 13%?!? In other words, far less than most of us pay, even though he made hundreds or thousands of times the income? Wonderful.)
*Republican VP Ryan stumps, raises cash in Virginia (I urge everyone to read up on this guy, his love for sociopath Ayn Rand, and his infamous "Plan" for Medicare. None of it is pretty.)
*Shooting at Family Research Council sets off high-caliber war of words (The shooting was despicable and absolutely unacceptable. Having said that, it doesn't change the fact that the FRC has been properly labeled a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center - see their statement here - for its vicious anti-LGBT rhetoric, actions, etc. And NO, there's nothing wrong with calling a hate group like FRC a "hate group.")
*Paul Ryan to campaign in Virginia Friday (I hear he'll be at the Westin  hotel, at 801 N. Glebe Road in Arlington, at around 5:30 pm, and that there will be protests. Something to do if you're in the Ballston neighborhood...)
*Editorial: A second helping of yuck ("Interest groups are piling on attack ads against Senate candidate Tim Kaine that have already been debunked.")
*Group with military ties campaigns against President Barack Obama (Wow, and you thought the "Swift Boaters" were bad? You thought the Republican lying slime machine couldn't any worse? Think again!)
*Temporary surplus, long-term trouble
*Does Bolling gain if McDonnell goes, and what about an LG void?
*Freedom upheld for Virginia death-row inmate
*Liberal groups launch ads hitting George Allen's Senate record (And there's a lot to hit! Remember, this guy voted 96% of the time with George W. Bush, including for two unpaid-for wars, an unpaid-for new entitlement, two massive/unpaid-for tax cuts, etc, etc.)
*Va. state workers to get bonus
*McDonnell to deliver Republican convention speech (Congratulations to Pat Robertson's "good friend" "Bobby!" Haha.)
*Black Caucus protests Virginia's new achievement goals
*A letter to Gov. McDonnell from the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus
*White House defends Biden after Wilder rebuke (Is Doug Wilder ever NOT an egomaniacal jerk? Ever since I started blogging about Virginia politics in 2005, I've watched this supposed "Democrat" bad mouth fellow Democrats, refuse to endorse them, and just be an overall jerk. Yes, he's a historic figure, so how about he just stay in the history books?)
*In first board meeting since strife, U.Va. leaders pledge unity
*U-Va. board speaks little of crisis
*FBI investigates former VRE employee
*Attack Ads Attack the Other Candidate's Attack Ads (I seriously recommend that everyone not watch TV until after election day. Unless you're a masochist, perhaps.)
*U.S. Senate Candidate Kaine Takes A Tour of Main Street Manassas
*Judge orders Richmond candidate's name placed on ballot
*Golden girl Gabby Douglas welcomed back to Hampton Roads
*Want to believe in Nats? Permission granted.

Jim Messina makes offer to Romney campaign on tax returns (0.00 / 0)

August 17, 2012

Matt Rhoades
585 Commercial Street
Boston, Massachusetts  02109

Dear Matt:

I am writing to ask again that the Governor release multiple years of tax returns, but also to make an offer that should address his concerns about the additional disclosures. Governor Romney apparently fears that the more he offers, the more our campaign will demand that he provide. So I am prepared to provide assurances on just that point: if the Governor will release five years of returns, I commit in turn that we will not criticize him for not releasing more--neither in ads nor in other public communications or commentary for the rest of the campaign.

This request for the release of five years, covering the complete returns for 2007-2012, is surely not unreasonable. Other Presidential candidates have released more, including the Governor's father who provided 12 years of returns.  In the Governor's case, a five year release would appropriately span all the years that he has been a candidate for President.  It would also help answer outstanding questions raised by the one return he has released to date, such as the range in the effective rates paid, the foreign accounts maintained, the foreign investments made, and the types of tax shelters used.

To provide these five years, the Governor would have to release only three more sets of returns in addition to the 2010 return he has released and the 2011 return he has pledged to provide.  And, I repeat, the Governor and his campaign can expect in return that we will refrain from questioning whether he has released enough or pressing for more.

I look forward to your reply.

Romney campaigns predictable, lame response (0.00 / 0)
It is clear that President Obama wants nothing more than to talk about Governor Romney's tax returns instead of the issues that matter to voters, like putting Americans back to work, fixing the economy and reining in spending.
If Governor Romney's tax returns are the core message of your campaign, there will be ample time for President Obama to discuss them over the next 81 days. In the meantime, Governor Romney will continue to lay out his plans for a stronger middle class, to save Medicare, to put work back into welfare, and help the 23 million Americans struggling to find work in the Obama economy.

See you in Denver.

This response, and more broadly Romney's refusal to play by the same rules as everyone else, should be unacceptable to every American - Democrats, Independents, Republicans, Greens, Purples, Polka Dots, whatever.

Wilder (0.00 / 0)
Is there any truth to the rumor that Wilder showed up at the Ryan fundraiser yesterday?  It wouldn't surprise me if it's true.

Apparently not true (0.00 / 0)
According to this: "Pool: Gov. Wilder was at the hotel, but he was apparently planning to attend Gov. McDonnell's education summit and went to the wrong hotel."

Stocks, building permits indicate Obama recovery accelerating (0.00 / 0)
No thanks to Republicans, of course, under whom we got INTO this mess in the first place, and who have spent the past 3 1/2 years working as hard as they could NOT to fix the economy but to try and make President Obama fail. Well, somebody failed, and it was NOT President Obama! LOL
