I'm Not the Bigot Whisperer

by: 5oclockshadow

Hey Friends.

It's been a LOOOONG while since I posted here, but I had a personal/political experience that I thought might interest the community.

As any of you who are Facebook "friends" with me will attest, since leaving Virginia politics for the private sector, I've remained prolific in my political postings on Facebook. My goal there has been twofold: 1) promoting progressive politics; and 2) engaging across party lines to refute the egregious excesses of conservatism.

Well, my days "engaging across party lines" ended today.  Click below and I'll explain why I'm done, and why this in itself is a victory for the forces of bigotry and greed swarming this nation under the name of "conservatism".

CONSERVATISM AND OUR DIVIDED NATION

It was the election of 2000 that really snapped me into politics.  I couldn't believe the injustice of the situation. I couldn't believe that for all of the patent lies told, half the country seemed happy to believe them.

5oclockshadow :: I'm Not the Bigot Whisperer
In 2004, I found an article called "What is conservatism?" and that gave me what I needed:  an understanding of precisely the ancient totalitarianism under which our nation had fallen sway:

Q: What is conservatism?
A: Conservatism is the domination of society by an aristocracy.
Q: What is wrong with conservatism?
A: Conservatism is incompatible with democracy, prosperity, and civilization in general. It is a destructive system of inequality and prejudice that is founded on deception and has no place in the modern world.

At the heart of it, Conservatism isn't about "family values" or "rugged individualism", it's about greed and power - it is the usurpation and subjugation of civil power by moneyed interests.

From the pharaohs of ancient Egypt to the self-regarding thugs of ancient Rome to the glorified warlords of medieval and absolutist Europe, in nearly every urbanized society throughout human history, there have been people who have tried to constitute themselves as an aristocracy. These people and their allies are the conservatives.

The only power in the world strong enough to oppose the aristocracy of corporate oligarchs is democratically-elected government as the founding fathers intended.  Corporate power, over the course of the past 30 years has set brother against brother, set the American working classes against each other, and critically, set lower-income, less-educated whites against those who could best help them achieve the American dream for themselves and their families.

The reason we see attacks against blacks, Hispanics, gays, atheists, liberals, and all the rest, is so that working folks will not join with their natural allies to empower government in opposition to rising oligarchy.

All of this is important, because until you realize that our national divisions are neither accidental, nor natural, you can get caught up in this controversy or that crisis, without seeing the uniting, underlying cause:  greed and the takeover of our American democracy.

LOVE THE SINNER, HATE THE SIN

With all of this in mind, my policy of engagement has been based on the singular principle of "love the sinner, hate the sin."  Even those professing, espousing, or parroting the most reprehensible right wing talking points and view points, are Americans.  They're our countrymen under the sway of a decades-long propaganda war.

Even and especially those who emerge as the grassroots thought leaders and writers, I surmised, are worthy of respect and capable of reason.  So, over the course of a decade, I have reached out to engage them, to show respect without backing away from the core principle that the basis of conservatism is fascism covered in the big three lies: "Family Values" - hate, "Small Government" - greed, "Strong Military" - fear.

FRENEMIES

So, all of this brings us to yesterday and a conversation I had with a grassroots conservative thought-leader named Alton Foley. I know Alton personally and have grown to appreciate him as an articulate, capable foe within the false "crossfire" construct of our current political discourse.  I have spent literally hundreds of hours debating every topic under the sun with the man behind the mustache, building, I believed a reservoir of respect between us.  All that changed however yesterday with this post at Bearing Drift.

We were fine discussing the Chik-Fil-A bigotry.  My position was and remains that Chik-Fil-A's bigoted CEO can say what he wants and do with his money as he pleases.  This is America after all. Still, that doesn't exempt his words from condemnation, nor exempt his business from boycott.

Then Alton went beyond the pale.

In a show of classical "false equivalency", he set out to contrast this bit of bigotry with a blatant lie about President Obama and the Muslim Brotherhood:

Chik-fil-A donates money to "hate groups"?  Obama helped the Muslim Brotherhood take over Egypt and gave them $1.5 billion of YOUR money.  The Muslim Brotherhood kills women for going out in public without a male relative, and murders homosexuals.  If you don't protest against Obama, for that, you're a complete hypocrite.

My simple "Have you no shame?", brought this epic, and pitifully misdirected rant.

Yes, I am certainly ashamed that the CEO of my country is spending taxpayer dollars, over 1 billion of them, to support an organization that openly espouses the murder of homosexuals, and the complete dehumanization of women. Let's not even mention what they think of Jews.

And I'm ashamed that people like you want to destroy a man of character like Dan Cathy, yet you stand off to the side and quietly applaud our current President who supports groups like this.

Josh, have you no shame?

With this, I determined my mission of mutual respect had come to an end.  I cut ties with Alton wishing him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

You see, bigotry is bigotry. Lies are lies, and nobody is more indoctrinated than the indoctrinators.

When you are stuck inside a veil of lies like that created by the right-wing media, it's easy to fall victim to the divisive politics that keep working whites subjugated like willing house slaves.  The Koch Brothers and Mitt Romney will never let the likes of my friend Alton into their country club, yet he will continue to defend them to his dying breath, I fear, because his belief system and his faith are fully tied to their abusive lies.

CONSERVATIVE HATE VICTORIOUS

Perhaps I was rash, but I'm just done.  I have spent more time rebutting the lies of the right among those in the right wing grassroots I consider friends than I have spent engaging in my local party, volunteering, or constructing proactive strategies to defeat America's rising tide of fascism.

It is yet my assertion that one day the conservative grassroots will wake up to the abuse of today's right wing media propaganda-sphere.   On that day, those who have given away so much power in order to serve the false ideals promulgated by the corporate overlords of the right will, I hope, come awake and rise up.  I still hope that and on that day racism, nativism, and the corporate takeover of American democracy will meet crushing defeat, and woe to the likes of the Koch brothers on that day.

That is my hope, but I just don't have time to be the fact checker for my abused and beloved countrymen anymore.  As I cut this tie with my friend Alton and other ties across party lines, I regret not a moment spent building bridges of friendship and respect for peers working for a better day.  I only regret that I am fulfilling the the secondary goal of the Beck's, the Limbaugh's, FOX, and the Koch echo-sphere:  the goal of keeping those of us who need each other angry, afraid, and separate.

UPDATE:  I've scrubbed references to the Koch brothers and the Nazi Koch family.  My apologies, I used CNN as a trusted source.  Click here for a thorough delineation of the real connection between Fred Koch and Joe Stalin and a thorough debunk of the CNN piece.

Whoa! (4.00 / 1)
My goodness. You printed that? Ilse Koch had two sons one of whom committed suicide and the other disappeared after she committed suicide in 1967. What is the connection to the Koch brothers?

It doesn't do liberal thinking any good to circulate such material.

Koch Power $pring$ from the $eeds of Na$i$m and $talini$m (0.00 / 0)
Please take a few minutes to read through the cnn piece on the Koch Family History before you start casting around about misinformation.

Without Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Russia the Koch fortune wouldn't exist, and it couldn't have been used to create the crypto-fascist John Birch society in in the 50's.   The John Birch, Federalist Society, Cato and all the rest of the the VRWC (up to and including the TEA Party) owe their existence to this grizzly Koch family legacy.

The family industrial legacy dictated "how", and the family ideological legacy dictated "why" these sons of hate and greed have waged war against American values for nearly a century.

Just sayin' ... Conservatism as part of the Ying Yang of politics is not FACISM. True more and more of today's conservatives are actually promoting an American fascism by remaining silent in the face of Bachmanesque bullying.  America's fascism is Christo-facism or as Kos put it so well ... they are the American Taliban.

Conservatism could be a Barry Goldwater version (a person who worked with and had respect for Ted Kennedy) or a Richard Nixon version (Goldwater considered him a liar and a crook per his last interview on 60 minutes).

Nixon and his acolytes ... Karl Rove, Roger Ailes, and assorted corporate dictators are the heart of the current Republican party. They are all about power and will use any and all cynical means to achieve it. Media (controlling the narrative) is as important to them as it was to the NAZI party (it arose via control of radio). Hence the creation of Fox News, promotion of Limbaughesque talk radio and internet sites devoid of reason or decency (facts).

The Goldwater wing (represented by the Ron Paul libertarians) has once again been marginalized by these Nixonian power players.

So I submit that facism  arises out of the right wing conservative reaction to a loss of power and failure (Dubya & the banking collapse). Your apt description of our current state-of-affairs really describes fascism ... which has become acceptable within the establishment of the Grand Old Party.

Whatever value Conservatism may have held in the past... (0.00 / 0)
...is overwhelmed by the fanatical zealotry it represents in the present.

One of its most anti-American aspects is its absolutism.  These radicals see no place in America for any opinion other than their own, and the false equivalency of your "yin-yang" analogy is extremely dangerous.  The left has always had its more extreme factions, but they have never held wealth or power the way that these crypto-fascists do.

The corporate takeover of our Democracy is the death of the American dream and the death of the vision our founding fathers had for this country.

It's all the more terrifying because the dupes at the grassroots level will fight with religious fervor against anyone with divergent viewpoint.

When we were growing up, we looked at the Germans in the '30s and asked how they could have let it happen.  Now we know.

Equivalency?? (0.00 / 0)
By using the Ying Yang metaphor / analogy I was only suggesting there is a right and a left. Conservatism vs. Liberalism ... Republican vs. Democrat ... Ying vs Yang. Not equivalency between the two ... at least not in this particular day & age.

There is no such thing as an ABSOLUTE person. Absolute is an ideal like infinity is a concept. There are however dark shades of grey conservatism in some people ... hence their favoring fashion statements of jack boots, grey and black uniforms and swastikas.

So enough of the metaphors ... I was just pointing out that conservatism is not necessarily a bad thing. What's bad is the place that the Republican party has gotten to, as evident with the promotion of hateful, vengeful ideologues who have no regard for facts.

I read despair and resignation (0.00 / 0)
in Soclockshadow's diary, and I must say it resonates. One can quibble, like Colston Newton, around the edges, on details, and one can correctly assess the yin and yang of "conservatism" versus "liberalism," or whatever one cares to name the pushme-pullyou of the political spectrum as I think Say What does, but we are where we are in America today, and I, as a former Republican, who left the GOP in 2004 after 20 years of trying to come to grips with how the party was changing, can only tell Soclockshadow "Welcome to the Club."

Today's uber conservatives (I prefer  reactionaries) command not only incredible amounts of money but powerful new psychological tools way beyond anything envisioned in Orwell's 1984 in their mission to establish permanently the new corporate elite as our aristocracy. These resources enable them to meld religious zeal with their narrative of greed, redemption, and social Darwinism into a cult whose adherents are almost entirely impervious to any discourse, evidence, or facts; they stubbornly live in their own reality. It is discouraging and frightening when you try to deal with individuals obsessed by the reactionary narrative, but we have to try, or, Where Will It End? (See my own recent diary on August 2, 2012, here on BlueVirginia.us: "Where are "Republicans Taking America 'Back' To?")

All I can say is welcome back... (and one more thing) (4.00 / 1)
I think the best way we can use the skills you have so clearly honed is to use them to appeal to those in our own midst to keep them motivated, engaged and likely to vote, and to disabuse them of the lies you tried to hard to disabuse the other side of.  Though you are probably much more experienced than I, I have found that the most difficult and discouraging thing about what we do is the supposed progressives who actually begin to believe the propaganda. And that, after all, is why they keep spreading the lies. They know that if they repeat a lie often enough, more and more people might believe them. And as institutions such as NPR fall more and more into the thrall of the conservative movement, progressives mind-numbingly think, "I heard it on NPR," ad nauseum.  I shake my head.

It is difficult enough to do this.  And still after all the evidence, there are many progressives who believe at least some of the BIG Lies by the Koch Lie Machine.  But if we spend our time keeping our own side informed and also reach out to so-called independents with fact-checks as well, we will win.  The conservative "thought leaders" about which you write (and who probably don't really give all that much thought to anything --even while believing they do) are a lost cause.  And keeping our own side informed is what we do here. I say "we," but I haven't been here as often as I'd like (but will increasingly do so).  So, Five-O'Clock: I hope you continue to use what you know at places such as  this.

There's nothing in the middle of the road except yellow stripes and dead armadillos (Jim Hightower). PS I'm on Twitter here.
