Find out how Ken Cuccinelli's not just a tinfoil-hat, John Birch Society-style, extremist wackjob, he's also corrupt, in the The Continuing Chronicle of Ken Cuccinelli's Corruption. It really stinks!

Romney Praises Israel's Government-Run, Universal, "Socialized" Health Care System

by: lowkell

Mon Jul 30, 2012 at 11:59:33 AM EDT

Does Willard "Mitt" Romney have compartments in his brain that are hermetically sealed and inaccessible to the other parts? If not, how can one explain the following facts: 1) he signed "Romneycare" into law; 2) "Obamacare" is basically identical to "Romneycare;" 3) Romney claims he hates "Obamacare" and would work to repeal it; and 4) Romney now has heaped praise on Israel's government-run, universal, "socialized" health care system?
Romney, who championed the Massachusetts health care mandate, but is an opponent of the federal mandate passed by President Barack Obama, marveled at how little Israel spends on health care relative to the United States.

"Do you realize what health care spending is as a percentage of the GDP in Israel? eight percent," Romney told donors at a fundraiser at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, speaking of a health care system that is compulsory for Israelis and funded by the government. "You spend eight percent of GDP on health care. You're a pretty healthy nation. We spend 18% of our GDP on health care. Ten percentage points more. That gap, that 10 percent cost, compare that with the size of our military - our military which is four percent - four percent. Our gap with Israel is 10 points of GDP. We have to find ways - not just to provide health care to more people, but to find ways to find and manage our health care costs."

Of course, this is EXACTLY the point many of us who pushed for Medicare for all, or robust public option, have been attempting to explain for a loooong time -- namely, that the U.S. health care system costs a lot more than other industrial democracies' health care systems, yet delivers far worse results. In other words, we get among the least "bang for the buck" of any advanced nation in the world in terms of health care, in a system that is mostly based on for-profit health insurance companies. The fact that Romney is busy praising Israel's system of "socialized medicine" is fascinating on many levels, not the least of which is the utter disconnect between everything he's been saying in this year's presidential campaign. It's also a case study on the lengths to which Romney will go to pander to whatever audience he happens to be in, and to say ANYTHING to kiss their butts. Blech.

P.S. I lived in Israel for 6 months and was automatically covered under Israel's "socialized medicine" system. Which is excellent, by the way, one of the best in the world. How do they do it? Ezra Klein explains that it's mostly a result of "strong government influence." Apparently, that's what Romney's now endorsing. We'll keep that in mind.

Romney unites Israelis and Palestinians: neither can stand him! (0.00 / 0)
It's truly astounding how horrible a candidate for president Willard "Mitt" Romney is, what a disaster almost every public speaking appearance is, how pathetic he looks trying to pander and flip flop, etc.  But this one, coming on the heels of Romney managing to insult and piss off the British, really takes the cake.
Mitt Romney told Jewish donors Monday that their culture is part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the Palestinians, outraging Palestinian leaders who suggested his comments were racist and out of touch with the realities of the Middle East...

[...]

Palestinian reaction to Romney was swift and pointed.

"It is a racist statement and this man doesn't realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation," said Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

"It seems to me this man lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people," Erekat added. "He also lacks knowledge about the Israelis themselves. I have not heard any Israeli official speak about cultural superiority."

[...]

It's true that Israel has logged tremendous achievements, said Abraham Diskin, a political science professor at the Inter-Disciplinary Center outside of Tel Aviv. But "you can understand this remark in several ways," he added. "You can say it's anti-Semitic. `Jews and money.'"

Does Willard "Mitt" Romney have compartments in his brain that are hermetically sealed

Yes.

A compartmentalized brain is typical (if I may say so) of the right wing brain, especially of the authoritarian right wing brain. That is how they can comfortably hold diametrically opposed concepts as true and dear to them. There is no cognitive dissonance. Yes, they demand personal freedom and small government, but Yes they demand government control women's health care decisions, for example. And then there's the deficit and climate change denial and corporations are people, and...

Romney's a snake oil salesman (0.00 / 0)
Clearly, the man will say anything to get himself elected. I'm surprised he hasn't outwardly resorted to inciting an investigation into Obama's birth certificate (a la his buddy Trump).

He is full of contradiction, full of hyperbole, and full of crap. We're lucky that his comments yesterday suggesting that the Embassy get moved to Jerusalem didn't start a war right then. Look, the man who used to be Governor of Massachusetts actually wouldn't be a bad President; he was moderate, pro-choice, business friendly, pro-health care, and in favor of gay rights. Unfortunately, he's acquired "John McCain" syndrome, whereby the fanatical right has removed his brain and replaced it with bread pudding, and now the only things he can say are what gets him applause from the lunatic fringe. That's the reason he flip flops so much. He's stuck between the real moderate electable Romney with the hypothetical Tea Party nutjob Romney.

Frankly, I'm not sure which scares me more, the fact that he has no policy, no plan, and no scruples, or that there are millions of people that think he would actually be a successful President.

Media (0.00 / 0)
I suspect old Mitt really doesn't care what he says knowing the media his constituents are likely to view won't report all the stupid stuff he says. You have to check the Wash Post closely to find his escapades. The Post seems to be searching for any old negative stuff it can find to report on Obama. Today for instance there is a front page story on people in OK not wanting health insurance. Who cares, but Obama haters.

Yeah, the media is utterly atrocious. (0.00 / 0)
If Obama had been a complete foreign policy fiasco back in 2008 (Obama was NOT at all, in fact he was very strong and received rapturous welcomes wherever he went), as Willard has been this time around, can you imagine what the media would have done to him? What boggles my mind is how anyone can possibly say the media is biased in a liberal direction, when it's in fact overwhelmingly either corporate or right wingnut (Faux, much of talk radio, the Washington Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Republican Times-Disgrace, etc, etc.).
