Find out how Ken Cuccinelli's not just a tinfoil-hat, John Birch Society-style, extremist wackjob, he's also corrupt, in the The Continuing Chronicle of Ken Cuccinelli's Corruption. It really stinks!

Delegate Lopez Questions Timing and Extra Cost of Governor's Chosen Special Election Date

(Thanks to Del. Lopez for posting this, I agree with him that this is absurd. I guess Bob McDonnell's too busy running around the country trying to defend the indefensible - Willard's latest gaffe(s), his horrible policy ideas, etc. - than focusing on doing what's best for Virginia. - promoted by lowkell)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 27th, 2012

Delegate Lopez Questions Timing and Extra Cost of Governor's Chosen Special Election Date for 45th District House of Delegates Seat

(Arlington, VA)  Governor McDonnell has set September 4th as the date of the Special Election for two Virginia General Assembly vacancies - the 45th District House of Delegates seat and the 5th District State Senate seat.  Now, in order to comply with State law, both parties must determine their Party nominees by August 4th.

In order to reduce overall costs and community expense, most political observers believed that the Governor would allow the Special Election to coincide with the November Presidential election.  By holding the Special Election on a different date, additional overall estimated costs just for localities in the 45th House District will be approximately $50,000.

"While I understand the importance of filling these vacancies as soon as possible, I believe the appropriate, nonpartisan approach would have been to contact the localities and local parties to seek their input on a mutually agreeable election date.  Instead, by acting unilaterally on setting a date, localities will have to unnecessarily spend considerable additional public funds."  Delegate Lopez continued, "Also, it is important to note, that by not holding the Special Election in November overall turnout will be significantly reduced for these two critically important General Assembly seats."

Who is going to remember to vote the day after Labor Day? (0.00 / 0)
The Republican Party seems to be obsessed with supressing the vote any way they can, and making an election as inconvenient as possible is just one more example of the lack of respect for voters.

Yeah, what a bizarre date. (0.00 / 0)
I can't imagine that anyone will be paying attention to this the day after Labor Day.  Is this just incompetence, or is it a plan by McDonnell to...what exactly?

Don't forget (0.00 / 0)
The Democratic National Convention is that week as well, so I think it's more of an FU to Democrats than anything else.  Both seats are very safe Democratic, but they will need to make sure there's no repeat of the Charnele Herring near-fiasco.

One rumor I've heard is that McDonnell and the (4.00 / 1)
Republicans want Kenny Alexander, as they consider him an "unreliable Democrat," and setting the date like this will dissuade anyone from running against him.

I Blogged About Kenny (0.00 / 0)
And no one cared enough to comment. He's going to be the next State Senator and he has a horrible, horrible record. But what are we going to do? Looks like nothing.

I just promoted your diary, which hopefully will give it more (4.00 / 1)
attention. Not sure what we can do about it, thought, given that the "fix" appears to be very much "in." Any ideas?

Long Term Problem (0.00 / 0)
We have a long term problem here. Virginia's minority community is the foundation for successful progressive politics, but we don't necessarily have the infrastructure in place to ensure that progressive leaders rise to the top within this community. We need to find a way to bridge the gap between the strength and activism we find online and the voters who bring about true Democratic victories.

Strongly agree. (0.00 / 0)
Hello, DPVA? Are you on this? Hmmmmm.

Republican in 45th HOD? (0.00 / 0)
There won't even be a risk of repeating the Herring near fiasco unless Republicans field a candidate in the special election in the 45th HOD. Have they got one?

[ Parent ]
Not worried about the 45th at all. (0.00 / 0)
It's the 5th Senate district that's the potential problem. See FreeDem's diary on that topic.
