Willard: Stay-at-Home Mothers Do Not Have "Dignity of Work"

Let's say Ann and Mitt are correct (0.00 / 0)

about stay-at-home moms. Fine. Then, logically, they should support the following things that almost all workers in this country are entitled to, right?

*Health benefits for those moms and their children
*A minimum wage for those moms, and overtime after 40 hours of work in a week
*At least 2 weeks of paid vacation for those moms every year
*A 5-day work week for those moms
*Unemployment benefits for those moms (e.g., when the kids leave home)
*Contributions to the retirement accounts of those moms?

We could upgrade that package to include benefits that folks at Bain Capital receive. I'm sure they are extensive. Does anyone know what those are?

One of the dangers of manufacturing a controversy like this (0.00 / 0)

There was never any substance to this controversy, and so it should not be surprising that language was found from Romney himself that completely undercuts the point his campaign has been making for the last three days.

It remains to be seen how the media covering Romney plays this. From what I have read, most reporters covering the campaign are well aware of the fact that the candidate and his surrogates trot out lie after lie, but for a variety of reasons, reporters are loathe to call Romney what he is -- a liar.

I think there are a few reasons. For one thing, the ability of these reporters to cover the campaign in a manner that is competitive with other media outlets leaves them somewhat dependent upon the campaign itself.

But more significantly, I think reporters refrain from doing this because they believe it is important for them to retain, at least in their view, a non-judgmental detachment from value judgments on what they are covering, and simple report "objectively" on what is happening.

I think that is the wrong way to go on virtually every level, except one. The ethics clearly favor reporting the truth, not some manufactures sense of objectivity. The business favors reporting the truth, as well, because the faux objectivity makes the product -- the reporting -- less relevant to customers.

But one factor mitigates heavily in favor of this style of reporting, namely, the individual careers of the reporters, who will all go further by fitting in with the rest of the so-called "Village," i.e., the class of politicians, journalists, bureaucrats, etc., that are at the center of and hold the power in our national political culture.  This is not necessarily ideological, but for a variety of reasons it is an attitude that favors the Right more than the Left, if only Conservatives ideology is more dependent upon an alternative, non-reality based narrative.

I feel so sorry for Mrs Romney... A woman without dignity

2. nobility or elevation of character; worthiness: dignity of sentiments.
3. elevated rank, office, station, etc.
4. relative standing; rank.

At least she got a nice birthday present, not as nice as being able to feed your kids but new solid silver floor mats for the Escalade - not bad...  Turns out the elevator installers left some dust on the floor of the new elevator.
