Virginia News Headlines: Wednesday Morning

by: lowkell

Wed Feb 15, 2012 at 06:47:40 AM EST

Here are a few Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Wednesday, February 15. Also, check out Del. Todd Gilbert (R, of course), claiming that abortion, in the vast majority of convenience, is a matter of "lifestyle convenience."

*At midpoint, extent of GOP's right turn is clear ("At Tuesday's procedural midpoint of the 2012 General Assembly, the GOP had passed unprecedented restrictions on abortions, illegal immigrants and gay people seeking to adopt, liberalized protections for gun owners, homeowners and home-schoolers, and put new requirements on voters and welfare recipients")
*Editorial: A conservative crossover ("If the lawmakers fail, only the governor can block some terrible bills.")
*Senate reaches crossover with a flurry
*Lawmakers act on flurry of bills ("This General Assembly session has stood out for its rapid-fire pace and unpredictability." And extremist insanity!)
*Senate spikes McDonnell's teacher-contract overhaul (Yet another FAIL for Bob McGimmick!)
*Virginia lawmakers produce competing road plans (The House's guts education and is filled with worthless, cringe-inducing gimmicks. It needs to be deep-sixed.)
*Va. House, Senate approve abortion-related bills (Soon to be destroyed: Bob McDonnell's false-but-widespread "moderate" image.)
*Va. Senate passes bill to test some welfare recipients for drugs (No drug testing for corporate welfare recipients, of course, just poor people. Typical Republicans.)
*Editorial: A shared responsibility ("The governor and state delegates have an obligation to support localities as they upgrade sewage plants to clean up the Chesapeake Bay.")
*Del. Gilbert says he 'regrets' comments on abortion
(He only "regrets" the political blowback. Of course he meant it. See video above.)
*Gay Couple Denied Marriage License at Arlington Courthouse
*Schapiro: More than Wilder's guns legacy at stake
*Hampton Roads officials applaud defense plans
*Virginia Beach City Council rejects no-tax-increase resolution
*Falls Church explores sale of water system

UPDATE: Also see Mashey Report Confirms Heartland's Manipulation; Exposes Singer's Deception, in which UVA Professor Fred Singer, "who Heartland keeps on a $5,000-a-month retainer to spread disinformation about climate change, claimed Dr. Frederick Seitz as the chair of the Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP) for two full years AFTER Seitz died." More on this later...
