Mitt Romney: "I'm Not Concerned With The Very Poor"

by: TheGreenMiles

Wed Feb 01, 2012 at 10:44:03 AM EST

You know Mitt Romney's said something truly outrageous when even the host of CNN's usually somnolent American Morning calls him out on it:
ROMNEY: I'm not concerned with the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it. I'm not concerned about the very rich, they're doing just fine. I'm concerned about the very heart of the America. [..]

HOST: You just said said, 'I'm not concerned about the very poor because they have a safety net.' But I think there are a lot of very poor Americans who are struggling who would say, that sounds odd. [...]

ROMNEY: The challenge right now - we will hear from the Democrat [sic] party the plight of the poor. And there's no question it's not good being poor. And we have a safety net to help those that are very poor, but campaign is focused is on middle-income Americans. My campaign - you can choose where to focus. You can focus on the rich, that's not my focus. You can focus on the very poor, that's not my focus.

So there you have it. If you're concerned about the 9% of Americans who are unemployed, if you're concerned about seniors who have to put off grocery shopping until the next Social Security check arrives, if you're concerned about growing income inequality, if you're concerned about families drowning in high medical bills or an underwater mortgage, vote Democratic this fall. That's not me talking - that's the frontrunner for the Republican nomination. Meanwhile, if you support an economic plan to help the 1% at the expense of the rest of us, vote Mitt Romney.

After the jump, video of Romney meeting with senior advisers to develop his strategy for the "very poor":

Almost every word that comes out of Romney's mouth (4.00 / 1)
is either false, distorted, warped (in terms of values), arrogant, elitist, clueless, and/or nasty. In this short interview, he manages to do ALL of those things. For instance, he says he's not focusing on the wealthy, yet his economic plan would WILDLY benefit the wealthiest Americans, hurt everyone else, and blow up the deficit by hundreds of billions of dollars. So that's just totally false. Of course, note that the brain dead media hack doesn't call him on that, and backs down right away when Willard "clarifies" that he supposedly DOES care about the "safety net?" What a complete joke.

What Would Ann Richards Say About Willard? (0.00 / 0)
The late Governor of Texas (yes, before the two village idiots who succeeded her), Ann Richards, famously said of George H.W. Bush that he "was born with a silver spoon in his mouth". By comparison to Willard, George H. W. has the empathy of Mother Theresa. If Ann Richards were alive today, what would she say about Willard?

Another flip-flop (0.00 / 0)
As ThinkProgress.org's Tanya Somander tweets, Mitt was quoted in the Washington Post two weeks ago as saying, "I'm concerned about the poor." Will he claim he's concerned about the poor, but not the very poor? Like, if you're eating Ramen noodles, Mitt has your back, but if you're eating at a soup kitchen, you're on your own?

Meanwhile, he cites the "safety net" that HIS party (0.00 / 0)
has favored slashing, gutting, not putting into place originally, etc, etc. I seriously fail to see how anyone can support this jerk.

The supposed message in this statement (0.00 / 0)
is that Mittens wants to assure the middle class that he has their backs when he says things like "I'm not concerned with the wealthy, they are doing very well," and that he's not concerned with the very poor because those (tiresome losers) unfortunates have a safety net and are suat the Welfare teat paid for by the tax-paying middle class listeners, who, Mittens assumes, resent such use of their taxes and really want to know "who's worried about me?"---- so Mittens is reassuring them that he cares about them. He is "focused" on the middle class. See how empathetic he is? Such a genuine commoner, he really cares about us, "the heart of America."

So why isn't THIS "class warfare" and dividing Americans (0.00 / 0)
into "classes?" Oh, that's right, I almost forgot, IOKIYAR (it's ok if you're a Republican).

They only call it class warfare ... (0.00 / 0)

Y'know, it's remarkable (0.00 / 0)
Mitt is in many ways a very smart guy -- got a law degree and MBA at Harvard all in 4 years, made himself a mega-ultra-gazillionaire.  And yet these types of comments show he has enormous blind spots and he doesn't even realize that he has them.

If Rick Perry was the Scarecow ("If I only had a brain"), Romney is quite clearly the Tin Man -- pretty damn small heart in there.

Impeachinelli! Now on Twitter.

Not a self-made man (4.00 / 2)
He was born with money.  It's easier to become a mega-ultra-gazillionaire when you're born regular garden variety gazillionaire than it is for someone poor or middle class to become one.  So, yeah, he's smart, but has zero touch with people.  He's a Republican Stepford Candidate.  Looks like one, talks like one, is one.  He has no clue what regular people face, and doesn't seem to want to know.
