Virginia News Headlines: Tuesday Morning

by: lowkell

Tue Jan 24, 2012 at 07:10:49 AM EST

Here are a few Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Tuesday, January 24. Also, check out Willard "Mitt" Romney advocating what he calls "self deportation" (no, this is not a joke apparently) for illegal immigrants in this country. Is that sort of like how Willard "self deported" his assets to the Cayman Islands to avoid paying taxes on them? Heh.

*For-profit-college group taps Steve Gunderson as next president ("While hiring a Republican for its top job, APSCU will maintain Democratic street cred in its leadership by retaining Brian Moran, who has served as its interim president since Miller's departure last year. Moran...will remain APSCU's executive vice president of government relations and general counsel.")
*Local civil rights activist to attend State of the Union
*Businessman kicks off campaign to unseat Rep. Rigell
*Keystone politics comes to Virginia (Why would a Canadian/Chinese export pipeline, one that brings at most a few hundred temporary construction jobs with it, be a big issue in this country at all, let alone in Virginia? Because Republicans are Big Oil corporate tools doing their bidding and making something out of nothing, that's the reason.)
*Lawmakers see progress in mold, maintenance work
*Will Cuccinelli sue the EPA to stop Chesapeake Bay restoration? (Well, he's already on a one-man crusade to trash the environment, why not keep it up? Heh.)
*UPDATED: Wolf, Cuccinelli, DC Officials Talk Rats (I can't believe this is a real issue. Is this a Stephen Colbert skit or something? Seriously? Rates?!?)
*Va. lawmaker opposing incandescent light bulb ban (And the lunacy among Virginia Teapublicans continues...)
*Putney wants to raise sales tax (No, raise the gas tax to pay for roads, not the sales tax overall!)

lowkell :: Virginia News Headlines: Tuesday Morning
*Uranium mining opponents return to Richmond
*Virginia Exports Holstein Bulls to Russia (And that's no bull! Heh, just had to say that.)
*Governor seeks private firm to run transportation hubs
*Fact Check: McDonnell on the VRS (Shocker, Bob McDonnell gets a "false" for his claim on VRS.)
*Could Va. reap $500 million per year by legalizing pot? (Is there any logical reason why alcohol and cigarettes are legal but marijuana, which does FAR less damage than alcohol and cigarettes, is illegal? No, didn't think so.)
*Va. Senate gives freshman good-natured hazing
*Fairfax student's suicide inspires more bills
*McDonnell hires director for his political action committee
*Virginians begin voting in GOP presidential race
*Va. begins writing permanent regulations for abortion clinics
*Editorial: [This space for sale] ("Gov. Bob McDonnell wants to sell naming rights to Virginia infrastructure.")
*Editorial: Pass a blue law special ("Virginia lawmakers should end the bans on Sunday hunting and liquor sales.")
*Kaine, Allen: Rubber stamps?

P.S. Oh yeah, crazy Newton Leroy Gingrich is up 5 points over Willard in Florida.
