Paula Deen, the Keystone XL Pipeline & America's Gluttonous Side

by: TheGreenMiles

Thu Jan 19, 2012 at 08:19:41 AM EST

This week, we learned famed culinary fat food-pusher Paula Deen has diabetes, but only revealed it 3 years late to protect her cooking empire and is now hawking diabetes drugs winking that  - for a price - maybe you don't have to do all those hard diet & exercise changes.

And then former oil company consultant Newt Gingrich blasted President Obama for rejecting Congress' efforts to force him to approve the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline before TransCanada has even determined a safe route, even though it would kill jobs and raise gas prices.

Last night I was in Harris Teeter and spotted this combo package of DiGiorno Pepperoni Pizza/Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies and wondered ... isn't gluttony #2 on the list of deadly sins? And doesn't America claim to be three-quarters Christian? Talk about cafeteria Christianity.

But come on - there's no money to be made in hard choices. How could Paula Deen keep making money by the pudgy fistful by telling people to stop shoving cheese, salted meat, chocolate & dough into their gaping maws & go for a walk? How could Newt Gingrich keep the oil money flowing by telling people the only real way to save on gas is to drive less or pay more for an efficient vehicle?

Much easier to tell people to have a second helping of pizza & cookies and take their magic snake oil pill, and tell people it's not our conspicuous consumption but the gays that are the cause of our moral decay.

Really? (3.00 / 2)
You're really equating Paula Deen with Newt Gingrich?

Seriously?

You're equating the former Speaker of the House, "Family Values" serial divorcer, running for President with a woman who writes cookbooks, and has a cooking show, and who happens also to have diabetes?

You're equating a desire to fuck over the poor, the planet, and the economy, with a desire to cook with real butter and sugar?

She hid the fact that she had diabetes. Big Fat Hairy Stinking Deal.

Time for you to readjust your value set, my friend. Because your post shows that you have let them get out of whack.

Nor are ad hominem attacks, like implying that Miles' "value set" is "out of whack." Thanks for your cooperation.

I am sorry for the profanity (0.00 / 0)
If there is a way to edit the comment, I would gladly do so.

However, I do not agree that suggesting that Miles get his assessment tools recalibrated is an ad hominem attack. He is making an equivalency between Paula Deen, cooking show host, and Newt. Gingrich.

He's making a statement that a woman who encourages people to cook with real butter is as evil as a man who wants to extract every last natural resource from the earth, take away every social safety net, and eliminate taxes for all his friends.

In what way does that not suggest that Miles might wish to recalibrate his scales of measurement?

If a geologist said that the tremor we felt in Virginia in August was as big as the one that caused the tsunami in Japan, wouldn't we say that she needed to recalibrate her tools?

Liz Miller, The Doorbell Queen.

Yes, they're both charlatans. (0.00 / 0)
I know it sucks when someone you've trusted turns out to have hidden the truth for years. But no, she doesn't "happen" to have diabetes any more than a smoker "happens" to get lung cancer.

Ee gads, I had never heard of this person before (0.00 / 0)
so I looked her up on Wikipedia. Apparently, she's a health food fanatic (note: major snark!):
The specialty is a buffet, which typically includes sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, deep-fried Twinkies, fried chicken, cheesy meatloaf, greens, beans, and creamed corn. Every meal is served with a garlic cheese biscuit and one of Deen's famous hoecakes.
Great stuff...that is, if you want to be obese, have high blood pressure, and die young. Wonderful.

And totally... (0.00 / 0)
YUMMY!  Reasonable people know that you can enjoy a meal like this every once in a while and not shorten your life span.  Same way you can indulge in Julia Child's pate de canard en croute.

Clearly Deen has had one too many sweet tea's in her lifetime, but as far as I can tell she's never advocated eating her southern comfort food at every meal - just the opposite actually.  Really doesn't bother me that she's kept the diabetes to herself.

Also, last I checked, butter and sugar were not (4.00 / 1)
considered healthy, certainly not in large quantities. As for Newt, he's not healthy in any quantity! ;)

Yes, butter's better than margarine, but... (0.00 / 0)
...neither is good for you, especially in large amounts (as in Deen's unhealthy, fat-and-sodium-laden cooking).

The French (0.00 / 0)
Eat plenty of butter and fat and are quite healthy overall.  Diet does make a difference, but there are many other factors that contribute to one's overall health.

Nice myth (4.00 / 1)
That study has come under heavy fire in recent years. If anything, the French may have an advantage by eating fewer calories, but even that has been disappearing as America's fast food lifestyle has gone global.

Not really a myth (0.00 / 0)
The French eat much more saturated fat than we do and have overall lower rates of obesity, heart disease and diabetes.  Eating butter and other fatty foods is only ONE factor in our alarming increase in all of the above.

Not sure I understand the point of the Deen comparison (0.00 / 1)
Obviously you don't think that Newt Gingrich is right in believing that the government should use or promote oil as a source for national resources.

What's the disagreement with Deen? People should eat healthier? I agree, but they're going to listen to, and eat, what they want. Do you want the government to step in and regulate Deen? Or maybe they should ban the sale of pizzas and cookies together, since that seems to be what triggered this odd post.

Or maybe you just intended to shame Deen ... for having diabetes?

I don't get it. Not that Grant's post are ever a beacon clarity and rationality, but this one is a doozy.

Let me put it in terms you can understand (0.00 / 0)
Whatever happened to individual responsibility? Conservation being a conservative value?

And as always, the boldest words come from the people who hide behind anonymous handles. What a beacon of bravery you are.

No need to get testy. (0.00 / 1)
Your normal shrill agitation is unnecessary , especially if you're going to make my points for me. Individual responsibility is great, and you profess to embrace as strongly as I do. Why, then, mention it in the same breath as federal energy policy?

The link between Gingrich's oil shilling and Paula Deen isn't just tepid, it's non-existent. Without that link, this post comes across as 1) being mad at Paula Deen for having diabetes, and 2) reaching a McCain-esque level of ornery and crotchety with "what's with people these days".

A culture warrior with a different agenda, one might say.

Gerry Connolly demolishes Keystone XL (0.00 / 0)
Listen here.

A few of Connolly's points:

1. It won't create more than a few thousand TEMPORARY jobs, then 50-60 jobs total.
2. It will NOT lessen our dependence on foreign oil.
3. It will actually RAISE price of oil in midwestern U.S.
4. This oil will be exported to China, South America, etc.
5. This is a pipeline for a foreign company to export oil to foreign countries.

WOW! 17 comments. (4.00 / 1)
Most in defense of Paula Deen? That is pretty sad, especially given what the very same people have NOT expressed outrage bout.  The list of nearly endless real outrages lies waiting.

By continuing to pitch her junk food, while concealing that her way of eating had caused diabetes, she was more than duplicitous and hypocritical.  And now it appears she is pitching a medicalized (use a drug for diabetes)  rather than a good eating approach to deal with diabetes. Obviously many people will need a medical approach.  But, in many cases, it is not the first line of defense.  BTW, diabetes may be correlated with age but it is not caused by it and most do not have it.  And btw, many commonly used medications increased glucose levels too.

If the folks who ripped into Miles here spend half as much time expressing outrage over the really outrageous, maybe we would not have had the problems we have.  "Doorbell Queen" seems to have her priorities way out of joint.

Outrage over Miles diary?  Are you kidding me?  I want to thank Miles for this and all of his diaries.  His value set is just fine.

There's nothing in the middle of the road except yellow stripes and dead armadillos (Jim Hightower). PS I'm on Twitter here.

Well, yeah, I feel pretty outraged (0.00 / 0)
I feel outraged that he's saying a woman in her sixties who has diabetes is on par with Newt Gingrich, when a quarter of US Residents sixty-five and over have diabetes.

I have, in the past, trusted Miles to let me know if there's something in the environment I need to worry about so that I can alert my friends to it. But if he's conflating Paula Deen with Newt Gingrich then how can I trust that his sense of alarm is accurate?

I can't.

Deen is a cooking celebrity. She has no power to affect societal change.

She's not telling people that a marriage must be between one man and one woman while asking for an open marriage.

She's not cutting foodstamps and cutting wages and also cutting taxes for the wealthy.

She's not pushing for school children to replace janitors.

She's not fighting against environmental regulation, nor is she pushing for offshore drilling, uranium mining, or fracking.

She cooks with butter and drinks lots of sweet tea. Oh! Evil! Burn the witch!
