Moran, Webb, Warner, Connolly Announce $180 Million for Route 1 BRAC Traffic Fix

PULLER & SUROVELL APPLAUD $180 MILLION FOR ROUTE 1 CORRIDOR
Alexandria, Virginia. Through the hard work of state, county and federal officials, the Route 1 Corridor will see $180 million in improvements.

Today, Congressman Jim Moran and Senator Mark Warner announced that they have secured $180 million of funding through a competitive grant process to provide transportation infrastructure improvements to military hospital installations. Only three localities with military hospitals across the country, including Fort Belvoir, were able to win grants. The improvements will likely be located between Telegraph Road and Old Mill Road at the northern border of the Woodlawn Estate.

"Congressman Moran's relentless efforts to move this funding through the Congressional process has been highly successful," said Puller. "The seniority, knowledge, and relationships that Congressman Moran brings to the table are an asset to this community," said Surovell.

In 1994, Senator Puller's H.J. 256 initiated the study that laid the groundwork for the widening of Route 1 from Prince William County to the City of Alexandria. Last year, Fairfax County approved $2 million to begin engineering improvements from Telegraph Road through Fort Belvoir to Woodlawn. "It is precisely because we have leaders like Senator Toddy Puller that we were in a position to get this through," said Senator Mark Warner.

"The Route 1 Transit Study authorized in 2011 is the next step in the process for finalizing a vision of Route 1 from Alexandria to Quantico. Because we showed that we are serious about working with county, state and federal governments on comprehensive transportation solutions, our grant was able to make it through," said Senator Toddy Puller. "This is a huge jumpstart to the ongoing revitalization of the Route 1 corridor."

"This is exactly the type of cooperation necessary to bring real congestion relief and improvements to Route 1 such as new lanes and the extension of the Yellow Line to Lorton," noted Delegate Scott Surovell. "This is another step toward a revitalized Route 1."

In addition to the transit study, Senator Puller has also helped to rebuild the Route 1/123 interchange, expand VRE services, and widen I-95 around the Occoquan River. Delegate Surovell has made Route 1 revitalization a priority during his tenure in office, leading a coalition to designate the corridor historic, introducing legislation to secure dedicated funding for infrastructure improvement and pushing for extension of Metro's Yellow Line to Ft. Belvoir and Lorton.

Richmond, VA - Governor Tim Kaine released the following statement today regarding the Department of Defense's $180 million grant for improvements to Route 1 around Fort Belvoir:

"This is great news for Northern Virginia and a testament to the hard work of Virginia's congressional delegation and local leaders who kept up the pressure on the Pentagon to meet their obligations to the communities affected by Fort Belvoir's expansion. This grant will improve Virginia's transportation infrastructure and help accommodate the influx of personnel to the facility.

"This represents another significant federal investment in the infrastructure needed to accommodate Fort Belvoir. In 2009, I approved the use of Recovery Act funds to improve the Fairfax County Parkway to better serve employees at the Defense Geospatial Intelligence Agency. These improvements are going to create jobs in the near term and support jobs and innovation on the base over the long term."

And also helps blunt Baker's bogus attack on Senator George Lincoln Barker that he somehow is responsible for the MARC Center debacle -- when flatly it is the judgment of the BRAC board and the lack of accurate planning studies by the Pentagon that was truly to blame.... The idea that a State Senator could have stopped stupid policymaking by an appointed committee that Congress has limited power over is preposterous and thankfully the improvements  mentioned here should hopefully  help  smooth the way for Senator George Barker's reelection.
