The Stench
Stench

Find out how Cooch took $55,000 from the disgraced "U.S. Navy Veterans Association," in apparent exchange for his promise to get the Virginia Office of Consumer Affairs (which had "notified Thompson's group that it no longer qualified for an exemption from state registration requirements") off the group's back. Can we say "pay-to-play?" Find out more.

Horrified at Bob McDonnell, Sheila Johnson "will never get involved in politics again"

by: lowkell

Fri Apr 30, 2010 at 14:58:41 PM EDT

Don't let anyone say you weren't warned about this, Mrs. Johnson!
...after McDonnell was sworn in, she watched in horror as the new governor enunciated a variety of socially conservative policies, especially regarding a constitutional ban on gay marriage and other civil rights issues, and then declared a celebration of Virginia's "Confederate History Month" without any mention of slavery.

"Politics, oh gosh!" Johnson says with a groan. "I feel like I was thrown under the bus on that one... The lesson that I've learned in all of this is I will never get involved in politics again."

What amazes me is that anyone, including a worldly woman like Sheila Johnson, would have believed Bob McDonnell's lies about being a "moderate" focused on jobs and not Pat Robertson's extremist social agenda.  Unfortunately, many Virginians, including Sheila Johnson, did believe Bob McDonnell's b.s., and now we're stuck with him - plus his ticketmates, including Crazy Cooch - for four years. Sadly for Virginia, Sheila Johnson isn't the only one who's watching this situation in "horror."

UPDATE: I almost forgot why Sheila Johnson was so impressed with Bob McDonnell - his supposed ability to "communicate."  Obviously, McDonnell "communicated" something to Johnson, like...oh, a bunch of outright lies that she bought, hook line and sinker. Duhhhh.

UPDATE #2: More reason to be horrified at Bob McDonnell.

While some Virginia leaders are urging the federal government to slow down or even reconsider drilling offshore after a fatal accident off the Gulf coast, Gov. Bob McDonnell will fly to Houston Monday to speak at a conference promoting offshore oil and natural gas drilling.

McDonnell will speak about "Jobs and the Economy: How the Energy Industry is Creating Jobs, Leading the Economy and Impacting Consumers" at the 2010 Offshore Technology Conference

At the absolute minimum, this shows a tin ear for politics. This guy seriously has national ambitions?  Sorry, but he's not even close to being ready for prime time.

Where's Your Apology? (4.00 / 1)
Sheila owes all Virginia Dems a sincere apology for her bad judgment, but she fails to provide an apology in the interview to which you link. Moral: wise up or stay out of politics in the future!

Sheila Johnson? Apologize? (0.00 / 0)
To paraphrase Leona Helmsley, apologies are like taxes, only for the "little people."

I guess she didn't enjoy Confederate History Month (0.00 / 0)
Oh well, at least she can keep more of the money her ex-husband lost to her in the divorce.

Amen! (4.00 / 1)
I couldn't imagine what McDonnell could possibly have promised Sheila Johnson that got her to endorse him. After all, he was on record - with the infamous thesis - about his right-wing views.

Both Johnson and Deeds owe VA Dems apologies (0.00 / 0)
As for Johnson, she can't walk away from politics now: she has a duty to help fix the damage she has done.

As for Deeds, I'm still waiting for an apology for his keeping the state of his marriage from us during last year's primary.  Had I known that he was in the middle of a divorce I never would have supported him in the primary.  He kept a piece of material information from Democratic voters and thereby contributed to last year's disaster.

I Agree (0.00 / 0)
I absolutely agree that Creigh Deeds allowed his ambition to overcome any political judgment he may have had. I also feel that you are being too kind to say he simply "contributed" to last year's disaster. He was a major player.

(At least I now can explain to myself why in the world the man took the summer off after the primary.)

Gov Bob is a conservative? (4.00 / 1)
Omigosh, who knew?

Impeachinelli! Now on Twitter.

For a wealthy woman, Sheila Johnson... (0.00 / 0)
...definitely doesn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed.

Single issue voting (4.00 / 1)
I imagine that Sheila Johnson was a single issue voter -- she wanted an anti-labor governor.  (Not that even Dem governors in VA are terribly strong on labor, but that's another issue.)  The problem with being a single issue voter is that power is power -- even if you get what you want on one issue, you most likely aren't a single issue person.  And the person has to live here, in a real world, that is often very complicated and very messy.

True (0.00 / 0)
From what I have read about Sheila Johnson, that is her big issue: being anti-labor.

Don't quit now, Mrs. Johnson (4.00 / 2)
Why let Bob McDonnell and the Republican liars suppress your vote or your voice?

Nice of you to acknowlege that you made one huge mistake (for which a lot more than just Virginia is suffering, thank you). That public acknowledgment may be all you can screw your courage up to do at the moment, but you owe us all, including yourself, much more than that.

You owe it to yourself and us to pour your heart, effort, and money into learning the truth and making amends by helping to elect good Democrats forever more, so they can begin repairing the damage your ill advised meddling caused. Obviously clueless and/or willfully suffering tunnel vision in 2009, you must now begin to rectify your errors. Don't just stand there, do something productive.

PS: This might be the time and place for you to fund a foundation to enable the Democratic Party to become a more enduring, professional, all-weather, all-year-round organization with serious paid staff at every level (meaning local grassroots, too), education and training for personnel and candidates, and a real, progressive think tank with a diverse membership (that means economically and racially).

This message needs to get through (0.00 / 0)
to Sheila Johnson. Do you know anyone who can pass it along?

The problem is she's not a progressive (4.00 / 2)
And she's part of the problem, a pro business, anti labor conservadem who supported McDonnell out of personal selfishness and greed.

Now she's embarassed at his social conservatism?  She's not that dumb. But she has lost face with her Gucci wearing, latte drinking NoVa friends. But she had to know what Bob McDonnell really was like. She was not a political novice and her protests now are disingenuous.

[ Parent ]
Yes, she had to know. (0.00 / 0)
So what's the deal, it was all about union bashing for her? Or did she just despise Creigh for whatever reason?

By the way, I'm honored that you're commenting here at Blue Virginia.  For those of you not familiar with Anonymous is a Woman (AIAW), she's long been one of the best and brightest in the Virginia blogosphere.  And no, that was NOT a backhanded compliment! :)

We could always just write her and make the Ask (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
She still should contribute (0.00 / 0)
to a fund for Democrats. conservaDem or no. Is she really anti-union/anti-labor above everything else? Why on earth is that?

[ Parent ]
well that's one win for the stutterers (0.00 / 0)
and the disabled. Which is not so bad. So long Mrs. Johnson don't let the door hit you on the way out. Now if you can get Bob Marshall to follow your lead,.....
