A Cantor Town Hall: Sorry, Tea Party Only

by: Brian Devine

Tue Aug 30, 2011 at 19:50:07 PM EDT

( - promoted by lowkell)

Eric Cantor's town hall tomorrow is advertised stating: "Congressman Eric Cantor of Virginia's 7th District invites his constituents to attend the next Cantor Advisory Council Meeting."  But unless you frequent the Richmond Tea Party website, you weren't invited, and probably never knew it even existed - because that's the only place it was advertised.

That's right - the only "constituents" Cantor cares to hear from at his town hall are the members of the Richmond Tea Party.  He's not interested in the unemployed who have been trying to reach him, or average Virginians who might need disaster relief.  Nope - just the Tea Party.

Its this type of inadequate interaction with his own constituents that makes him horribly unfit to represent the many of them that need the help of a compassionate congressperson the most.  As Lowell reported, there were more people in the Richmond area without power following Hurricane Irene than in southeastern Virginia near the coast.   But it seems that being left in the dark is a circumstance that Eric Cantor's constituents are all too familiar with.

Cantor's responsibility is not to represent just those who support him - but also those that need his support.  Many questions will be answered by how he takes the ideology with which he bases his rhetoric at the national level and applies it to the Virginians he represents at home.  Cutting government and tax breaks for the wealthy won't turn the power back on and create jobs at home in his own district.

Eric Cantor needs to be sent a message - no matter how far in the Tea Party sand he seeks to bury his head.

Richmond Tea Party seems to have forgotten to pay their bill. Anyone know where/when this is happening?

Guess they didn't like me linking to it, so here's the details: (0.00 / 0)

Got anything to say to Eric Cantor ?

Here’s your chance…

    Folks are fuming w/ EC (0.00 / 0)
Whether its tea party folks, VA progressives, unemployed demanding action on jobs, recent quake and/or hurricane there may be a big turn out..but anticipate being "turned away" at the door or being barred because you didn't  "R.S.V.P" EC's invitation plus its being held on private property.

So when did democracy require an invitation? Its a public official acting in his capacity as such and it should be open to all the public. He wants to hear from his constituents-but only those who RSVPed..and got an invitation?

At least my congressman (VA 1) actually held a townhall(and got chewed out by seniors) yet kept it civil. Good luck VA 7th.

    Where in VA-1 was there a town hall? (0.00 / 0)
I'm in VA-1. I recently contacted Rob Wittman's Tappahannoc office about town hall meetings only to be told he was not holding any.

Where was his meeting in VA-1?  Do you know if he's planning any more?

    Sorry (0.00 / 0)
Fumble fingers this morning. I just got off the phone with a staff member for Robert Hurt VA-5, here is a quote:

"Congressman Hurt will not be holding any town hall meetings during this recess"

I may be wrong but I was under the impression that a lot of voters have questions and concerns NOW and want them addressed at this time not at some point in the future.

Stark contrast to Tom Perriello (4.00 / 2)
who held dozens and dozens of town hall meetings. The difference?  Perriello has cojones and a brain.  Hurt has neither.

    Amen (4.00 / 1)
That is 100% correct, please take a look at the diary I posted today regarding Hurt's shucking and ducking. Using your recently posted template I e-mailed the questions to his office and we shall see what his response is. I campaigned for Perriello and was disappointed when he lost. Hurt is nothing more than Virgil Goode version 2.0, Goode was the GOP drone who Perriello defeated the first time he ran for Congress.

    Perriello (4.00 / 1)
To further point out the contrast I should remind folks that Tom Perriello held more town hall meetings than ANY OTHER MEMBER OF CONGRESS during the recess while health care reform was being debated.

    Tom Perriello (0.00 / 0)
Could always run again next year.

And I have the phone record to prove it! On Thursday the 18th someone from his office called in reply to an email inquiry I made (which I thought was strange?) and said he had NO plans to hold a townhall meeting before Congress returned from recess.

You can't tell me they didin't know about tonight's meeting two weeks ago, and if they didn't, they never made the requested return call I asked them for if his schedule changed!

BTW, drop by "Jews Against Eric Cantor" on Facebook and tell us you "Like" us, you really "Like" us!

    Political event (0.00 / 0)
FYI folks, this appears to be a political event, not an official government function. Therefore, they can control who comes in, cannot promote it using government resources, etc.

It's actually kind of shocking to me how many Dems stood up there and took their lickings while the R's are hiding in their turtle shells.

    Sorry.... (0.00 / 0)
Realized my point was not clear at all. The staffer in DC actually did the right thing. If she had directed you to a political event that would have violated laws/rules. That is not to excuse the fact that it is still a totally weak move to organize it this way so it can be hidden.

    Campaign Gathering (0.00 / 0)
This just validates what most of us already know, Cantor and others of his ilk concentrate their efforts and meetings on keeping themselves in office and the h**l with anything else.
He darn well knows that his ideology is not popular with the electorate at large and does not want any publicity that shows that to be the case hence closed audiences.

    [ Parent ]
    Then he can't call it a constiuent meeting (0.00 / 0)
    just saying!

    [ Parent ]
According to the T-Disgrace, this is how (0.00 / 0)
it turned out, closed doors and all.

Loved the quote at the end, "it was organized from Washington."
