PPP: Allen Crushing Radtke; Cuccinelli Crushing Bolling

Verrrry interesting poll results from PPP:

*"In a primary contest between Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling and Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, Cuccinelli leads 45-21. Cuccinelli is strongest with very conservatives with whom he leads Bolling 56-15..."  In other words, the people who actually decide Teapublican nominations these days strongly, overwhelmingly favor Ken Cuccinelli over Bill Bolling. In other words, if Cuccinelli wants the Republican nomination for governor in 2013, it's his for the asking. Sorry, Bill Bolling, looks like you're LG for Life!  Heh.

*"George Allen appears to be too far a reach for the Tea Party...Allen takes 68% of the vote to 6% for Jamie Radtke, 2% for Tim Donner, 2% for EW. Jackson, and 0% for David McCormick."

*Also, "When we polled Virginia in late February Allen led a generic 'more conservative' challenger by 27 points at 52-25. Now that margin's expanded even further to 35 points at 58-23. A seriously contested primary for Allen was already a long shot. Now it's looking like an even longer shot."

This one's over, in other words. Felix will be the 2012 Republican nominee against Tim Kaine for U.S. Senate. And yes, the Democratic nominee WILL be Tim Kaine, as everything I'm hearing indicates that Bobby Scott is not seriously considering a primary race against Kaine.

*Finally, with regard to the 2012 Republican presidential contest, it "depends greatly on whether or not Sarah Palin enters the race." Either way, Rick Perry is very strong, as are Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney. Everyone else is trailing, with Tim Pawlenty and John Huntsman barely registering at all. Very interesting.

Radtke still unkown (0.00 / 0)
I think it's worth noting that 77% of those surveyed didn't have an opinion on Jaime Radtke. When you consider that these were Republican primary voters who were surveyed, it really goes a long way towards showing that she simply hasn't done a good job of getting her name out there. When you consider that Allen's already served as Governor and Senator, it's safe to say that much of his lead is due to name recognition and not necessarially philosophical reasons.

When you combine that with the fact that Michelle Bachmann and Ken Cuccinelli both had strong showings in their respective races, the Tea Party appears to have a strong hold on the GOP in Virginia -- their Senate candidate just hasn't put together a good campaign. It will be very interesting to see if this means George Allen will have to continue courting the Tea Party even after the Republican Primary. My bet is that he will.

The problem is, among Republicans who (0.00 / 0)
DO know who she is, they don't like her (7% favorable/16% unfavorable). She's toast if you ask me.

I agree she's toast... (0.00 / 0)
....I'm just saying that folks shouldn't view it as though the Tea Party isn't a strong force within Virginia's Republican Party. Her campaign has failed to get people excited, but the Tea Party philosophy has unfortunately gotten people excited about other far right folks.

I don't think anyone was arguing (0.00 / 0)
that the Tea Party isn't a force within the Virginia Republican Party. Note that I have been calling them the "Teapublicans?" There's a reason for that.

Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride (0.00 / 0)
This has to be crushing news for Bolling who has never really connected with the GOP faithful. For them, he's a yawner. Signing on with Romney's campaign is an indication he knows that his only chance is as a moderate on the coattails of a moderate. He's betting against a wingnut tide in 2012.

Good Luck on That (0.00 / 0)
Well, in a GOP primary wingnuts rule, so poor ole Bolling may be toast. After all, he's normal.

I would strongly encourage Bolling... (0.00 / 0)
...to start knee-capping Cuccinelli -- y'know, the Tanya Harding approach.

And if you need any help, Bill 'ol buddy, just gimme a call!

Impeachinelli! Now on Twitter.

Silver Lining to 2013 (0.00 / 0)
The only silver lining I can see to 2013 is that Cooch might be too extreme to win statewide and his defeat could drag the rest of the GOP ticket down in flames. All the more reason to make sure we nominate a strong ticket and run a lot of candidates locally in 2013, unlike this year.

Broad and early candidate selection (0.00 / 0)
sounds ideal, if only....

Don't count on it (0.00 / 0)
Like Bob McDonnell, Cuccinelli is slick, and quite as capable as McDonnell (who, after all, used to be known as Taliban Bob) in hiding his extremism in moderate rhetoric that does not frighten voters.

The only reason we are not seeing a more extreme version of McDonnell right now is that he has hopes of higher, national office, and he is happy to let Cuccinelli carry the anti-gay, anti-woman, anti-science, anti-enlightenment banner in Virginia while he builds his "moderate" cred for a national run, maybe in 2012, but more likely in 2016, assuming Obama wins re-election.

[ Parent ]
Very possible, but (0.00 / 0)
what will Taliban Bob be doing between the end of his term and 2016? Voters' memories are short, a "what have you done for me lately" kind of thing. Palin is finding this out, so, unless McDonnell has an invitation from Faux News to be a commentator, what can he do?

He can do two things: Little and Nothing. (0.00 / 0)
