Nouveau Riche Moran Cozy in the Limo

by: Dan Sullivan

Sun Jul 31, 2011 at 09:13:21 AM EDT

DPVA Chairman Moran has proven that 90% of success is showing up; always the beneficiary of someone else's coattails. He knows it and so do his supporters. Projecting their own discomfort with criticism of his hypocrisy, they have labeled his detractors limousine liberals. The DPVA hierarchy is chronically delusional.

If Moran were to reveal his compensation from the grifters he represents, his loyal following might not wince. But he probably couldn't get away without a making campaign contribution or two to Democrats (not a one since 2009). It appears he is in good company in this inner party charade. But, Moran is the diametric opposite of, say:

Attorney General Jack Conway (D), who is leading a multi-state investigation into for-profit colleges with top prosecutors from 18 other states, alleged that Daymar Colleges violated state consumer protection laws by engaging in "unfair, false, misleading and deceptive acts and practices" involving financial aid and recruitment of students. The suit seeks damages and restitution for approximately 5,000 students who were allegedly swindled by the schools. - Huffington Post

Conway probably isn't fond of right-to-work laws either. Of course, taking  principled, progressive stands in a liberal state is much easier...oh wait, we're talking about Kentucky here. The fact is that Moran and his DPVA are scared of their shadows and this puts the truly principled Democratic candidates in the state at great risk. No one has their backs.

Here's the message to the true limousine liberals: the shoe leather liberals, the ones who showed up on the streets and in the malls for Webb in 2006, the legislature in 2007, and Obama in 2008 are staying home this fall. The Virginia Senate majority is slipping away unnoticed publicly by anyone other than the Washington Times. Quietly and privately, the tents are folded awaiting the worthwhile fight of 2012.

Careful Dan! (4.00 / 2)
Brian Moran's snarling (p)sycophants and shameless, mindless, groveling apologists might get mad at you. I've seen this before, they come at you like a pack of angry Chihuahuas!

And Will Drive Away Principled Democrats (0.00 / 0)
I know one dear soul who was torn apart making the decision to abandon Moran in the gubernatorial campaign. Then the Moranites responded with threats and bile, sealing the decision by revealing his campaign's true nature. For Moran, standing on principle means "standing" on principle.

Hello...contrast attendance at OFA events with that of DPVA events. The party claims DPVA = OFA, but we all know that is nonsense.

If DPVA=OFA (0.00 / 0)
then we are truly screwed. Let's hope they have nothing whatsoever to do with each other.

In 2008... (0.00 / 0)
In 2008 the DPVA complained over and over that OFA wouldn't cooperate with them. I guess not, considering that the DPVA has no idea how to set up and run a grassroots campaign.

Believe me, DPVA still does not = OFA, thank God.

I Switched (0.00 / 0)
At first, I supported Moran for governor, but after the disgusting trash talk he gave at the JJ Dinner about a fellow Democrat - Terry McAuliffe - I quickly decided that Terry was the better man, by far. I still think so. I guess that puts be in the sights of the "angy, rabid Chihuahuas." Forgive me if I'm not trembling in my boots...

Moran didn't just trash talk T-Mac (0.00 / 0)
His campaign (and, at the MINIMUM, Moran himself allowed this to happen) smeared and trash-talked grassroots supporters of Terry's candidacy, threatened his own supporters that they'd better not switch (one Moran supporter at the time said that he wanted to switch, but that Moran would "knife" him), and perhaps most egregious of all, ran an utterly incompetent, pandering, self-contradictory, absurd campaign that belied his own past record as a moderate to conservative/pro-corporate Democrat on many issues. Why on earth that record of nastiness and, worse, incompetence would be rewarded by making him DPVA chair is beyond me. Why on earth he'd be allowed to stay as DPVA chair, while simultaneously working as the head of an organization that preys on minorities, working people, veterans, and basically everyone Democrats are supposed to be defending, is utterly inexcusable. Yet the silence from DPVA Central and Steering Committees remains deafening. What's the deal?

BTW, do you think that Mr. For-Profit/Scam Colleges Dude (0.00 / 0)
has ANY moral authority whatsoever to speak like Matt Damon does here? And, as long as Mr. For-Profit/Scam Colleges Dude is heading up DPVA, do you think the DPVA has any moral authority whatsoever to speak like Matt Damon does here? Hey, here's an idea: how about we replace the Scam Colleges Dude with Matt Damon as DPVA chair? :)

On the other hand.... (0.00 / 0)
while I do find it disturbing that Brian Moran has not made a donation to a Democrat since 2009, consider that, under his position as Chair of DPVA he may have decided it more diplomatic not to single out and annoint any one candidate with his individual donation, but rather that it is better to raise funds for DPVA, which then supported Democratic candidates. I personally do believe that he should resign one position or the other, especially if he is made permanent chief lobbyist for the for-profit educators' trade association, but I also understand that a man with a family has to make enough money to support said family, so does DPVA pay enough (you really do get what you pay for in this world)?

Moreover, I also believe that Brian has worked hard trying to drag the DPVA into at least the late 20th century if not yet the 21st. After attending the first ever DPVA Summit training session in July, which was set up by Brian, it is obvious to me that such political education was sorely needed. Far too many of our local committees and our candidates are, frankly, clueless, utterly unable to cope with the marching morons of today's Republican Party, and the Summit was a revelation to them. I have to say Brian did a good thing with the Summit. I am as impatient and infuriated with the Democratic Establishment as anyone here, but I will not engage in an orgy of ad hominem attacks on Brian, even when he is not perfect (according to my specifications, that is).

There are many things I want the state Party and its Chair to change/improve, for example: find credible candidates for every office (especially in Senate and House of Delegates), train and support them; listen to the grassroots on issues, instead of ignoring them ("father knows best" belongs in the Republican playbook); develop a succinct and compelling vision for Virginia, then engage in agitprop, offering an alternate view to the sterile, narrow, and nasty Republican vision; proactive "messaging" (what an inadequate word) instead of waiting for Republicans to choose and frame issues---- and so on. Getting these things means working within the Party---- or, forming a new Party of our very own, and I am not yet at the point where that seems feasible to me.

This Is Hardly Personal (4.00 / 1)
This isn't an ad hominem attack. The attack is against Brian's anti-Democratic position vis-a-vis supporting the for-profit-college scam and the hypocrisy of simultaneously taking up the banner, as Chair of the DPVA, of the consituency being scammed.

There were plenty of Democratic candidates he could have financially supported in 2010. However, if one wants to straddle the fence on important issues, giving a buck or two to Tom Perriello wouldn't serve. Eric Cantor probably had as much a chance of Brian's financial support.
