Brian Moran Announces Summit

by: Dan Sullivan

Mon May 16, 2011 at 19:35:12 PM EDT

It wasn't the centerpiece of the evening, but it might signal that the DPVA intends to conduct outreach. Moran declared the need for a grassroots effort and development of a message that effectively advocates Democratic values and positions. There will be a July Summit to craft that message.

The fete at Crocs in Virginia Beach Sunday evening was billed as the first in a series of DPVA gatherings across the state that are intended to provide casual and affordable venues on a more regular basis than the annual banquets. Senator Mark Warner headlined the evening and was joined by a number of local electeds and a full house of Hampton Roads Democrats.

We have a "great message?" (0.00 / 0)
OK, sounds good...so what is it exactly?!?

Yeah, I'm holding my breath. (0.00 / 0)
Bottom line: Virginia Democrats haven't had a cohesive message at least since 2009, and there's no sign whatsoever of that changing anytime soon.  For a variety of structural reasons, it may even be impossible for DPVA to come up with a cohesive message. Meanwhile, how about candidate recruitment? During his campaign for DPVA Chair, Brian Moran promised to recruit candidates for every House of Delegates race. How's that coming along? Uhhhhhhhhh......

Brian's only serving a partial term, right? (0.00 / 0)
Brian is only finishing Dickie Cranwell's term, correct?

Maybe it's time to start lining up support for a new direction at DPVA when the time comes to elect a new chairman.

I have a few requirements of my own:

1) Must not have any active lobbying connections, state or federal.
2) Should not be anti-netroots.
3) Should be in a position to commit a large amount of time to leadership, and should therefore not have a full-time day job.
4) Should be from the Greater Richmond area (let's say within an hour of DPVA headquarters) so they can easily commute to the main DPVA headquarters and can drop in unannounced from time to time.
5) Should be committed to building a Grassroots movement that extends beyond DPVA central committee and spans the election cycle, so we don't have to start from scratch every year.

As long as we're day dreaming, what else would we like?

1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. Yes.
4. It's fine if they're within an hour or two, as long as they don't mind driving.
5. Yes.

Other:

6. Strong enough to be their own person, carve out their own identity, set DPVA on its own path.
7. A progressive would be very nice, but not an absolute requirement. No conservadems, though, absolutely not.
8. Hard worker, absolutely committed to working this job 24/7/365
9. Proficient in both old and new media.
10. Willing and able to shake things up at DPVA.

6-10 are good too (0.00 / 0)
Of course the irony is that we will need to persuade the central committee members that this is what they want too.

4b) Should be willing to travel (0.00 / 0)
and visit local committees and campaigns statewide, even when not a headline speaker at major event. Bonus for being willing to drive oneself in one's own modest car.

Since we're talking reform(ers) (0.00 / 0)
we in the grassroots came up with some pretty good ideas in 2009 after the Deeds' campaign:

Maybe we can not only get an agressive Chair, but one who can make some real changes, maybe even listen to the grassroots hahaha.

Where will the summit be held, and will it be open to the public ? (0.00 / 0)
As is typical, the DPVA web site just says it will be 15-17 July, but then says that "Details" will be provided later. That's been one of my most frequent complaints about the DPVA web site, i.e. they never post details about upcoming events - not even the regular quarterly meetings - until very clos the time of the event. In the case of the 3-4 June meetings which will be on-campus at The Inn of Virgnia Tech until all the hotel rooms in the main building had been reserved Fortunately, they did still have some rooms still available in the building across the street so I got a room.

I've never understood why the DPVA web site events listings can't be current with important details posted far enough in advance for people who aren't Central Committee members with good "inside" contacts to get a little advance notification.

Outreach begins with communication (4.00 / 1)
Perhaps the DPVA could begin their outreach by posting accurate information well in advance of events. By not doing this they are conveying the message "If you have to ask don't come." That's the equivalent of saying "For insiders only".

I've noticed that in communities where outsiders are not welcome there is little signage. Posting vague messages on the DPVA website is the equivalent of this.

Exactly. (0.00 / 0)
All the signals here point to an exclusive club, one that really doesn't want to have you as a member if you're not already "connected" and certainly not if you're a "troublemaker" (translation: progressive activist, netroots, grassroots, evil blogger).
