Maps of New Virginia Senate and House Districts

by: lowkell

Fri Apr 29, 2011 at 11:44:30 AM EDT

Courtesy of tech whiz Dave Leichtman, see here for final (assuming Gov. McDonnell signs them into law, as he's said he will) House of Delegates redistricting maps and here for final Senate maps. A couple of examples: here are the 30th and 31st State Senate districts (click to "embiggen").

UPDATE: It appears the data posted here, at least for House districts, is...uh, "funky." Do a "before" and "after" on the 45th, for instance. If this were really the case, I think we would have heard something from David Englin by now. :)

UPDATE #2: Dave Leichtman seems to have fixed whatever the problem was. All is now well in the world. :)

They created a little disconnected piece of the new 5th (0.00 / 0)
Threw off the parser. All is right with the world now. Well, not really, as you can see from these maps. But the maps are "right" :)

Yes, technically they're correct (0.00 / 0)
but in every other way...blech.

My thanks... (0.00 / 0)
...for offering us a tool that allows us to easily see what the district lines are.  The state endorsed "Thick green line" maps are very difficult to read.

I think this means I'm no longer in Clogan's 29th Senate district. (0.00 / 0)
If I've read the map correctly, I'll be in the "new" NoVa 13th Senate district since I'm in the far western end of PWC just north of I-66. It seems an odd coincidence that I'm now in both the 13th HoD district (Bob Marshall's) and the 13th Senate district, although I could be wrong about remaining in the 13th HoD district; I think I may now be in a "new" HoD which I think might be the 22nd HoD, so it could be I'm just trading the 13th HoD for the 13th Senate district.

I would like it if I'm in both a new Senate district and a new HoD district because we can now field candidates in both who don't have to run against an incumbent (basically, open seats).

I know we already have a potential candidate for the HoD if he doesn't have to run against Marshall in the 13th HoD(he even said he might be willing to move to avoid running against an incumbent). I'd like for this gentleman to consider running for the Senate rather than the HoD "open" seat since we would have a real shot at picking up another Senate seat, but we can't come close to an HoD majority anyway. At one time, Bob Marshall had been rumored to be looking at homes in the Bristow area so he could run for Colgan's seat instead of trying to challenge Barker. But I don't know if Marshall is now already in the 29th, or if he is even still interested in the state Senate.

Personally, I think the boundaries are as good as we could have hoped for, and in my case a bit better than I'd expected. I don't see any remaining issues that would be a problem with DOJ approval, so I think we can go ahead and start recruiting HoD and state Senate candidates.

Follow me on Twitter.

You show the 30th Senate (0.00 / 0)
What you should show is the impact of the change for the 30th on the "senates" Democratic Representatives decimation of the 36th Mount Vernon / NOVA district.  Wiped us out - now a PWC majority seat.

BS, BS, BS

Dick Saslaw... (0.00 / 0)
...apparently bought himself a bunch of safe Dem real estate by having his district take over most of Fairfax County's Mason district. (Which will make him my Senator. Ugh.)

He'll enjoy that until the day he gets primaried by an actual, progressive, grassroots Democrat.

Impeachinelli! Now on Twitter.

The content of your comment was fine, the profanity is not allowed. Try again without the Donald Trump language. :)

Any info on the Congressional districts? n/t (0.00 / 0)

Not Yet (0.00 / 0)
This deal officially just covered the State Senate and the House of Delegates. You'd think if they sat down to wrangle all of that together they might touch the Congressional too. They didn't.

Given the strict timeline the GA was working under I think it's possible to wait on the Congressional lines for now. I think you could even draw them next year, opening the door to the GOP to wait and see the results of the State Senate elections this fall.
