I Am So Glad We Defeated Harris Miller

Read this Huffington Post article on the taxpayer-funded corporate welfare scam known as the "for-profit 'education' industry" and you'll understand the title of this article. It's truly disgusting, as is the president of the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities (where DPVA chair Brian Moran also has sold his soul for a bootload of $$$$). Here's a sample:
Some of the largest publicly traded college corporations receive nearly 90 percent of their revenues from federal student aid programs. While government money fuels increased enrollments and record profits, the industry has poured increasing amounts of those proceeds into an unprecedented effort to preempt the rules through greater influence in Washington.

In other words, an industry that derives a vast majority of its revenue from federal funding is actively using that money to fight government efforts for accountability.

The last-minute scramble earlier this month was only the latest chapter in the industry's yearlong battle against increased federal oversight of their schools.

Overall, the industry spent more than $8.1 million on lobbying in 2010, up from $3.3 million in 2009, according to a Huffington Post analysis of lobbying data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.

[...]

...[Harris Miller] downplayed the importance that political contributions play in changing policy, pointing to the donations to many who have actively opposed the industry.

"I know some people like to think there's this simplistic correlation between writing a check and getting a vote," he said. "I wish it were that easy."

Read that last quote again: Harris Miller WISHES he could just write a check and buy a vote. He actually ADMITS IT! Wow, we always knew he was an utterly arrogant sleazeball lobbyist, but he doesn't even try to hide it!

Just as bad, by the way, is the fact that Hararis Miller has hired on the "got cash, we'll represent you, no question asked!" Podesta Group (sampling of clients: BP, Wal-Mart, "Clean Coal," Duke Energy, and Egypt under Husni Mubarak) and the utterly execrable Lanny Davis (activities include support for "the Latin American equivalent of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce," "defending the Honduran military authorities' removal of President Zelaya from power in the 2009 Honduran constitutional crisis," providing public relations support to "Ivory Coast leader and flagrant human rights violator Laurent Gbagbo" as well as "Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, the longtime dictator of oil-rich Equatorial Guinea"). Anyway, it's completely unsurprising that the for-profit "education" cesspool, which specializes in ripping off taxpayers, poor people and veterans, would fit right into Podesta's and Davis' client portfolio, and also that Harris Miller would take to those two like pigs in s***.

This is an issue that we have to continue to direct peoples' attention to.

The Richmonder

Agreed. It simply boggles my mind that Virginia Dems (0.00 / 0)
are not utterly outraged by this, or maybe they ARE outraged but are simply too meek to speak out about it?  Whatever it is, it needs to f***ing stop now!

Sure, and we got Brian "Kaplan" Moran as DPVA chair. What a deal ! (0.00 / 0)
There was a time when I wanted Dickie Cranwell to resign as DPVA chair, but I really think Dickie was conned by Miller just like a few other party "leaders", and at least Dickie isn't on the Kaplan payroll. I can't say I blame Brian for taking the big-bucks lobbyist job when the DPVA chair position doesn't pay anything, and his law practice was "defunct" so he had to find an easy way to make big bucks with no clients left to pay his bills.

Looking ahead to 2012 when Obama wins re-election and the entire DPVA officer cadre has to stand for re-election or be replaced, I am looking forward to a clean sweep of the DPVA leadership - and I do mean "clean". I just wish I could remain in the 11th CD instead of being re-districted into the 10th CD because I would have had a good chance of being elected to the 11th CD Dem. membership and become a Central Committee voting member so I could have a vote on who is the next DPVA chair. Sadly, I don't think I have much chance of getting the votes in the 10th CD committee, but maybe I'll give it a shot anyway. The call to convention is a year away, so I have time to find people who will attend the convention and maybe vote for me.

Every time (0.00 / 0)
Every time I see this photo, I think of how easily I close my eyes in photos.  I have taken more bad photos than should be possible. For just the flicker of an instant I start to feel sorry for this guy.  And then I yank myself back from feeling sorry for him.  I make myself forget that there is at least one person in politics in Virginia whom I really admire who is friends with Harris Miller.  And then I think: This particular photo is just so perfect for Miller.  You found the perfect photo, lowkell.  It ought to be emblazoned on billboards lest we forget what Harris Miller has unleashed and what he could have won electorally.

But lowkell you have nailed why none of us should feel sorry for this pathetic man and his industry which have figured out how to scam the federal government out of our tax dollars, and trash the education system at the same time. It is illustrative of all the privateers, really.  So, keep on blogging it, please.  And thank you.

And also thank you for (0.00 / 0)
including the references to Lanny Davis.  My, God, as you mention, this man apparently did legal work for the folks who overthrew a duly elected government in Hondurus.  (In a lengthy  interview) I have seen him try to defend the "work" he did in Hondurus and it is appalling.  Where-ever he turns up it is usually on the wrong side.  It is an embarrassment that he ever served a President.  (Ugh.)
