Slavery Is a Mere "Nit" to Republicans

by: Teddy Goodson

Sun Apr 11, 2010 at 20:57:22 PM EDT

Here is a revealing interview of Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi, defending Governor Bob McDonnell's declaring "Confederate History Month" without ever mentioning slavery. Slavery is a "nit," says Barbour, as in "stop picking at nits."

Governor Haley Barbour and Governor Bob McDonnell are two birds of a feather in the same flock. Guess "R" for Republican stands for "Racist." Must be in the Republican DNA.

Digging it deeper (2.00 / 2)
Every time Bob McDonnell's supporters try to defend him, they just make it worse. Here's a letter to the editor in today's Roanoke Times:
Like it or not, the Civil War and the Confederacy are integral parts of Virginia's history, and you cannot rewrite history no matter how loud your voice or large your platform might be.

I don't recall this media feeding frenzy during anything to do with Black History Month.

Where did the other comments here go? (4.00 / 1)
It says there are four comments, but only Miles comment is showing. What's up with that?

There's a hidden comment. (0.00 / 1)

Hidden? (4.00 / 1)
As in censored? Or is there some way of being able to see them that I haven't figured out yet?

[ Parent ]
Oh god, not this "censored' b.s. again. (0.00 / 1)
How may times do we have to go through this?  This is a COMMUNITY blog with a RATINGS SYSTEM (difficult concept, I know). As with pretty much every other community blog in existence, if a comment gets enough "troll" ratings, it disappears except for "trusted users." Do I really have to explain Blogging 101 to you?

Not to mention that the concept of (0.00 / 1)
"censorship" applies to the government suppressing free speech rights. Given that a blog isn't the government, it doesn't have to allow any comments at all, can ban anyone it wants, can delete any comments it wants, etc., etc. Again, this is Blogging 101, what about it don't you understand?

My experience with "community blogs" is about zero (4.00 / 1)
This is the only community blog that I read, so forgive me if I'm not up to speed on all this stuff. I just think it's pretty unfortunate that you let folks censor things they disagree with by rating them zero. I, personally, would like to read everything, regardless of community ratings.

Too bad there's no way to set that up.

And, for the record, we don't allow censorship over at TC. You are free to come over and debate me whenever you want Lowell, and we won't censor what you write.

You could read everything (0.00 / 1)
if you were a trusted user. So, work on getting enough "mojo" and eventually you might become one.  Again, though, it's not "censorship" unless the government does it. On a private blog, like TC, I would not only expect but hope that you'd moderate comments to an extent.  You wouldn't leave a stream of profanity or pornographic content up there, would you?  No, didn't think so...

Yeah, right (4.00 / 1)
Unless I suddenly woke up tomorrow as the reincarnation of JFK, I doubt I'm ever going to get enough "mojo" to become one. It seems as though a few folks on here like to give 0 and 1s to anything they disagree with. That's unfortunate.

We only moderate out the spam and the pr0n. Profanity is okay to a certain extent, but what we never, ever do is let anyone moderate comments based on content. I guess that's where I have the problem.

What does it say about the community when the community is intolerant of opposite opinions?

[ Parent ]
To the contrary, I think you'll find a great deal (0.00 / 1)
of tolerance here for opposing viewpoints, intelligently and civilly expressed.  When comments become belligerent, ad homimem, or untruthful, it's a different story though...

Have you looked through the number of ratings for my comments? (4.00 / 1)
I don't think I've ever been belligerent, ad hominem or deliberately untruthful (although I have made mistakes). That hasn't stopped folks from giving my comments zeros and ones, including you, Lowell.

As I said before, I don't expect tolerance from Democrats on the internet - they are quick to point out intolerance in others but not so much when it comes to looking in the mirror.
