Wake Up, Virginia Democrats

by: Dan Sullivan

Fri Dec 31, 2010 at 18:20:33 PM EST

Brian Moran denies the reality he represents an industry that preys on the unfortunate. He defends businesses promising outcomes that are highly improbable; betraying the goodwill and trust of the American people. As their agent, he facilitates what is de facto fraud. Where's the outrage from Virginia Democrats? Here's mine.

Benson Rollins wants a college degree. The unemployed high school dropout who attends Alcoholics Anonymous and has been homeless for 10 months is being courted by the University of Phoenix. Two of its recruiters got themselves invited to a Cleveland shelter last October and pitched the advantages of going to the country's largest for-profit college to 70 destitute men. - Business Week

What we have here, is a state party chairman who shamelessly defends an industry that dredges federal funds by trolling for the homeless and despairing in an effort to siphon entitlements and grants you and I provide in the belief they may rehabilitate fellow citizens. What is more worrisome than Moran's (and, thus, the DPVA's) vulnerability to criticism for hypocrisy (because it will be hard to find a Democratic candidate who will defend these thugs) in the next cycle, is that Moran may lead the Party lurching backwards. Recall: Brian Moran unabashedly supports Virginia's "Right-to-Work" laws. It all fits nicely: If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Dan Sullivan :: Wake Up, Virginia Democrats
This is about the heart and soul of the Democratic Party in Virginia. This is a moral issue. It is an issue of character. It is a conundrum for progressives who expect camaraderie and common purpose when among Democrats. Accepting any of the rationalizations for the for-profit "educational" sector is contrary to logic, good sense, and fairness. Fairness: something that used to reliably separate the two major parties. The for-profit "educational" sector is filled with oxygen thieves and charlatans. And the Democratic Party in Virginia, by embracing Brian Moran's "leadership," stands ready to march rearward in league with the Republican Party, away from the values that once distinguished it.

"For-profit colleges took in $7.6 billion last year in Pell Grants -- federal higher-education money for low-income individuals -- more than triple the amount in 1998-1999, according to Education Department data. In the 2008-2009 school year, about 25 percent of the 6 million students who got Pell money attended a for-profit college, according to the department." - Bloomberg

Business Week points out that a real college education couldn't deliver the elusive promises of these vulturine predators. In one case a recovering crack cocaine addict who has served several prison terms for drug offenses was in a shelter and looking online for work when she saw an ad that led her to the Web site of for-profit school ECPI College of Technology based in our very own Virginia Beach. She applied, passed a placement test, and started ECPI's medical administration program last March. The mother of four is borrowing about half of the $23,000 tab from the federal government, with grants and scholarships paying the rest. ECPI officials are aware of her background. They "guarantee (her) a job in the field." That is simply not realistic. Her history is a red flag for health-care employers. But ECPI President Mark Dreyfus said she has a shot because not all employers check backgrounds and she could process records in a back office where drugs aren't accessible. ...because not all employers check backgrounds...; a threshold confession that her background is a barrier to employment in the field the "institution" accepted her for admission.

...schools see nothing wrong with reaching out to the disadvantaged. "We don't exclusively target the homeless," says Ziad Fadel, CEO of Drake, which also sends recruiters to welfare and employment agencies. "We are in a community that is low-income and happens to have a lot of people on welfare."

Brian Moran has the "right-to-work" for whomever he desires; family to feed, bills to pay, all that. That is not the issue. It is quite possible that he believes the drivel he delivers about for-profit "education." That further disqualifies him if he does, by the way. The issue is that if the DPVA can hold him up as a representative, it can accept the tarnish of his associations. If it can do that, it can betray any or all of its constituency.

In the end, Benson Rollins didn't succumb to Phoenix's hard sell. He is taking a class for his high school equivalency degree and hopes to study law enforcement in college. For now, he would like a job so he can pay child support for his one-year-old daughter, whom he rarely sees.

The Phoenix recruiters, he says, failed to mention a critical point: He would have to take out a government loan at 5% to 7% interest to pay the $10,000-plus annual tuition. "I'm in a homeless shelter, and money is hard to come by," Rollins says. "It's not worth going to school to end up in debt."

The facts point to Benson Rollins being stronger, smarter, and truer to his values than Brian Moran. Or maybe Brian Moran doesn't hold Democratic values. Maybe the DPVA should invite Benson Rollins to Virginia.

Great post, Dan! (0.00 / 0)
Let's hope Virginia Democrats come to their senses in 2011 and stop tolerating the intolerable in their party chair. Personally, though, I'm not holding my breath on that one...

By the way, for anyone out there who (0.00 / 0)
thought that our beef with Brian Moran was about one specific election or one specific candidate, you were absolutely, completely, and deeply wrong. Let me spell it out for you guys: this is a profound MORAL issue, the kind that doesn't go away. Ever.

Follow me on Twitter.

Glad to see you say that (0.00 / 0)
That means Terry's moral issues will be discussed as well. Not here maybe, but everywhere else.

Highly ironic comment (0.00 / 0)
given that it was the Moran campaign in 2009 that raised the outrage level over T-Mac's (supposedly) horrible moral/ethical transgressions in his business dealings and Democratic fundraising activities. According to the Moran campaign, those (supposed) moral/ethical transgressions made T-Mac "unelectable" and essentially unfit for higher office. Yet now, with a far worse transgression than T-Mac was ever accused of, it's perfectly cool for Brian Moran to lead our party?  Right, gotcha. (snark)

Terry's Moral Issues? (4.00 / 1)
First, I'm not sure I completely understand the equivalence you draw between the entirely legit criticism of Brian Moran over this issue, and the right to criticize Terry McAuliffe.

If McAuliffe has "moral issues," then they ought to be discussed, just as Moran's actions with respect to his advocacy for this sketchy industry ought to be discussed. One is not dependent or justified by the other, don't you agree?

So, my question is, what "moral issues," exactly, are you referring to?

Is it just more of the same guilt-by-association garbage, or the suggestion of some shady business dealing without any actual evidence of wrongdoing,  that was peddled out during the 2009 primary? If so, then I don't think there is much discuss.

But if you have something new, something substantive about Moran, then I think you should write a diary about it and allow it to be debated.  I'd certainly be interested.

Exactly. (0.00 / 0)
The diehard Moran supporters have no way to defend their guy, given that he freely chose to go work for Harris Miller ripping off poor kids and minorities and veterans, and given that he freely chose to run for DPVA chair while ripping off poor kids and minorities and veterans. So, in pure kneejerk fashion, they do the only thing they know how to do: bash Terry McAuliffe. Brilliant!!! LOL

Catherine Reynolds and her husband gave a sizeable donation to Terry McAuliffe. She is the owner and operator of Educap, a private funder with an expensive ($31m)jet until Congress started investigating them, among other decidedly non-education related expenses. (Source: CBS News)

The issue is that if the DPVA can hold him up as a representative, it can accept the tarnish of his associations. If it can do that, it can betray any or all of its constituency.

I guess the same goes for Terry as the 2012 nominee, also a function of the DPVA.

Give it a rest. Brian is the chair, and all your carping does nothing but detract from the work to be done.

Heartland of Virginia

And we know Brian is a Democrat. Stop the absurdist BS.

That Would Be 2013; Detract From the Work? (0.00 / 0)
Who said Moran isn't a Democrat? Lots of people are Democrats. He FAILS as a progressive.

And what has Terry betrayed for that donation? You don't get to choose your donors. You do get to choose your employers.

Yes, he is the chair and that means the DPVA FAILS. Work? What work? Look at the DPVA website. Remember: "Communicate"

Indeed... (4.00 / 1)
The reason many of us did not support Brian Moran had nothing to do with some political distaste for a person. It was because we could not support someone who solved his own financial problems by aligning himself with one of the sleaziest educational scams in the country.

The dysfunction of the DPVA just compounds with each passing day. I would give up, except that I refuse to let the incompetence of the party keep me from working to improve the state I love.

Well said. (0.00 / 0)

Interesting, unless I'm missing something (0.00 / 0)
DPVA has not interactivity with the public. I see no email addresses nor even a blog. It seems to be one way and I ain't listening. Am i wrong?

It looks like the "blog" (0.00 / 0)
(in quotes because it's not stand-alone, nor does there appear to be a way to comment, so it's pretty much not a "blog" by most people's definition) is on the front page of the website. I don't see an email address, but the address and phone # are listed at the bottom of the page.

We (1.00 / 1)
can debate this forever, but the bottom line is he's in the chair of DPVA. So we either deal with it or try to get him out. Which would never happen probably.

We're stuck with him. He's not gonna quit his job or the DPVA. Our only option, imho, is to keep pressure on him to elevate the DPVA and make it a usful organizarion.

Another option. (4.00 / 1)
They - Mark Warner et al. - can get him a new "day job." That really shouldn't be too hard, then we can move on to what you suggest ("keep pressure on him to elevate the DPVA and make it a usful organization," which it most certainly is NOT now).

But until they get him a new job (0.00 / 0)
I will have nothing to do with him.

The Grassroots Can Stay Home (4.00 / 1)
DPVA can make more videos about volunteers like the "Weakly Update" from 22 December that featured paid staff members and one volunteer (and no, the mispelling wasn't a typo).

Vote with our boots. Keep 'em off the ground. Send our $$$ and give our support to specific candidates. Probably inevitable anyhow.

Is it JUST a coincidence? (1.00 / 1)
Were Dan Sullivan, Elaine in Roanoke and lowkell McAuliffe supporters in 2009?

Is it?  I can't really say because I don't know you people, but am I wrong?

Why else would lowkell begin by trying to dispel such a correlation to begin with?

We Were All Deeds Supporters After the Primary Too (4.00 / 1)
How does support for McAuliffe or Deeds have anything to do with Brian Moran's defense of the indefensible? Lowell is not trying to "dispel such a correlation." He is dismissing it as ad hominem; characteristic Moran tactic. If you have one smidgen of support for the argument that Moran's day job doesn't matter, present it. Get a pledge from the Republicans that they aren't going to make hay with all of Brian's soundbites, and I might cease and desist.

But really: supporting "Right-to-Work?"; supporting an industry that trolls for the homeless? You good with those?

Here's my objective: an effective DPVA. Brian Moran offers the same old, same old, and worse.

Dedication to the Party? He didn't even maintain a local committee membership after his failed run.

[ Parent ]
I was initially a Moran supporter (4.00 / 1)
then went to Terry, then to Deeds in the general. Your point?
