Robert Hurt Blows Off the NAACP

by: lowkell

Sun Sep 12, 2010 at 12:48:28 PM EDT

The Huffington Post reports:
Republican Robert Hurt, who is running to oust Democratic Rep. Tom Perriello in Virginia's fifth district, will not be participating in a Sept. 19 debate hosted by the Cumberland County NAACP, taking issue with the fact that the third party candidate will also be there.

[...]

Perriello campaign spokesperson Jessica Barba sharply criticized Hurt for skipping the debate, saying Hurt "has turned his nose up to 5th district seniors, small business owners, and African-Americans in skipping the first three debates of the race. Voters have to wonder if Senator Hurt is so afraid of explaining his votes to raise taxes and utility rates that he continues to hide from questions about his record."

Good point by Jessica Barba; either Hurt is afraid to debate, or he's extremely confident and doesn't feel that he "needs" to. Either way, it's not acceptable. As Republican political strategist Mark McKinnon says in the HuffPo article, voters should "demand their representatives debate early and often...It ain't the law, but it sure as hell ought to be an obligation." Apparently, Robert Hurt doesn't see debating as an "obligation;" he sees it as purely optional.

P.S. In the HuffPo article, the Hurt campaign claims that "Robert has engaged in dozens of public debates in counties and cities all across the 5th District." Oh please, do tell - dates and locations of these "dozens of public debates?" What's that, you ask? Right, the sound of crickets chirping ("liar! liar!"), loud enough for everyone in the 5th CD to hear.

Refusal to debate (0.00 / 0)
is usually due to one of two reasons: 1) internal polling shows the refusnik is so far ahead that lowering himself to debate with the loser only gives exposure to the loser, and works to reduce the refusnik's lead, OR 2) the refusnik is afraid of exposing him/herself to the oppnent's superior debating skills. If the refusnik were a competent debater he would be able to do some fast footwork and explain and/or cover his poor record, and put the monkey on the back of those trying to expose his poor record.

In other words, Hurt is either so far ahead in the polls, his refusal is based on 1) above; OR, he is a lousy debater and an incompetent, cannot think on his feet, which would be number 2. Which is it?

He's certainly a lousy debater (0.00 / 0)
and the other things you said (incompetent, cannot think on this feet).  Also, he probably figures he's ahead in the polls. Hopefully, he's wrong on the latter calculation.

I'll pick (0.00 / 0)
option #3: Both

Hurt is way ahead of Periello (never mind the teabagger... Clark? Clarke?) in the polls, so he feels secure enough. Secure enough to blow off Periello because, if he had to argue with Periello face-to-face, he'd be not just crushed, but left as a bloody smear on the wall. And secure enough to use Clark/e (?) as a smokescreen (don't want to legitimize the upstart).

@lowkell. Vis those mysterious "public debates" Hurt is supposed to have held... I bet that what his campaign means by that is not debates with either of the opponents, but the cozy gatherings with supporters, where he might have answered a question or two. Anyone could have attended those (presumably), therefore they've been "public". And some of the questions might have been of the "Tell me what your position on X is" and "why should I vote for you?" variety, which would constitute "debate".

I wonder... (0.00 / 0)
If this opens the door wider for Clark to do well in Nov?  The ball is in his court, I would think.

Counting on (0.00 / 0)
Mr. Hurt is counting on the racist, xenophobic and fundamentalist vote to carry him into office because he offers nothing else.  There is little difference between what he offered and what Virgil Goode offered.  He is looking for  the low information voter to win the day for him.

It (0.00 / 0)
is also time for Tom to get some endorsements to use in his commercials. The NAACP would be a good star.

What Hurt obviously isn't concerned about but should be is Clark pulling votes away from him and hopefully opening up a path for Tome to win.

I'm not convinced Tom will lose. I still have hope for him.
