Scott Rigell Signs Tea Party Pledge

by: lowkell

Thu Aug 26, 2010 at 14:41:01 PM EDT

That's right, Scott Rigell is no longer a mainstream Republican (if there is such a thing anymore), he's an outright tea partier who believes that:

*Congress should "set America on the right fiscal track by supporting a Balanced Budget Amendment or similar Constitutional amendment."

*"Internet neutrality," "campaign finance reform" and the "fairness" doctrine somehow "abridge free speech."

*Congress should pass legislation that "defunds, repeals, and replaces the Affordable Health and Patient Recovery Act and actively promotes free market solutions to address the nation's healthcare concerns."

*It's essential to "fight any measure that subverts U.S. sovereignty, whether through trade, currency, environmental causes, the United Nations, immigration amnesty, or under the guise of human rights."

What's really interesting is that, despite his supposed concern for the budget deficit, Rigell's campaign says it opposes cutting government "entitlement" programs like Social Security, Medicare, and "federal welfare and education programs."  The problem is, if you pledge not to raise taxes and if you take "entitlements" off the table, about the only possible way of balancing the budget would be to zero out all "discretionary" spending, including military spending. Is that what Scott Rigell's advocating Or, would he prefer to raise taxes sharply? Which is it, Mr. Rigell?

P.S. It's lunatic crap like this that pushes me to support "Democrat" Glenn Nye, even though I don't like the guy one bit. Ugh, what a choice!

P.P.S. By the way, Rigell also has signed onto the Koch-funded, Americans for Prosperity "No Climate Tax Pledge."

This pledge will have little effect on Rigell's support from the GOP but removes any hope that Golden can obtain an endorsement from the Tea Party. Karen Hurd, the nominal Top Pot of the local teasters, says she doesn't want Golden to hurt Rigell's chances against Nye. This agreement probably eliminates Golden as a factor in the race.

Agreed. (0.00 / 0)
But it still means that Rigell is no longer a "mainstream" (whatever that means these days) Republican.

much to the chagrin of two former VBRP Chairs who have wandered off the reservation. Golden and Chuck Smith, who is running against Representative Scott, kind of an out-of-conference game, both demonstrate that loyalty goes one way in Redville.

I just hope that there are enough Independents who don't buy into the Koch Industries-funded effort to derail any regulation of business through using the bogus Tea Party. Nye isn't my kind of Democrat, but then I don't live in the 2nd.

Amendment Repeals? (0.00 / 0)
What does he think about repealing the 14th and 17th Amendments?

Mere parsimony is not economy. Expense, and great expense, may be an essential part in true economy.

Yes, he most certainly has!

What has happened to Rigell?? (0.00 / 0)
Not just the tea party thing but has he aged beyond recognition?
I remember seeing him at a church thing years ago and well he looks awful.

Repeal the healthcare reform, (0.00 / 0)
would he?

Lowkell, your:

What's really interesting is that, despite his supposed concern for the budget deficit, Rigell's campaign says it opposes cutting government "entitlement" programs like Social Security, Medicare, and "federal welfare and education programs."

"isn't the half", as our Brit friends say. The repeal of the healthcare reform, by itself, would carry a heavy price:

http://www.washingtonmonthly.c...

How is he going to do that, on top of not touching all the above-mentioned "entitlements" and still keep the deficit from falling into a no-return ditch? Inquiring minds would like to know...

Enough is enough (1.00 / 1)
Enough is enough.  Progressives won't vote for moderates because they are not Democratic enough?

In the most recent poll conducted by Gallup, 42% of Americans self identified as conservative, only 20% as liberal or progressive with 35% as moderate.  Gee, if the Democratic party is for progressives only, then just how have they been winning elections with only 20% of the vote?

If Democrats control Congress, and progressives are only 20% of the vote, that means more moderates then progressive voters voted for the Democratic candidates.  Now, do you enjoy having Democratic representatives in Congress instead of Republicans?  No you don't unless that representation is 100% progressive, right?  Ever heard about proportional representation?  You're only entitled to 20%.  If you want to remain in majority you have to include some moderates in the mix or deal with a Republican majority in Congress.

The Democratic Party has been, is, an will be (0.00 / 0)
a "big tent" party. My main problem with Nye is that he's attacking other Democrats - the vast majority of them, actually - who voted for the "Wall Street Bailout" and health care reform. Also, I see no reason for an environmentalist like myself to get excited about someone who voted against clean energy and climate legislation.  Personally, I've got better things to do with my time, and better candidates to focus my energies on. I guess the question is, what are YOU doing to help Glenn Nye, given that you seem to like him and his "moderation" so much??

As a moderate newly proclaimed Democrat I must say that I am not enthused that my vote for Glenn probably means, because he caucuses with the Dems, we'll end up with Nancy as Speaker.  I can live with that if you can live with Glenn being part of the caucus that gets her there.

What's wrong with Nancy?  She comes from one of the most liberal districts in our nation.  If her leadership leads to compromise, she might lose her seat based upon the vote of her constituents even if the votes in the House were there to still give her the leadership post based upon the votes of the leaders.

Nye needs votes (0.00 / 0)
As I understand it, Glenn Nye has plenty of money to run his campaign.  What he needs is votes.

Progressives are snapping at his heals that he is not progressive enough.  The Democratic Party can not claim to be the Big Tent party if the base (I guess I am pointing at you progressives) insist he doesn't belong inside the tent.

You progressives seem to think there is enough of you to rock the world.  You can influence elections, but you can not win the elections on your own; you're only an extreme minority in the electorate and you need some help winning elections.  If you don't like the Democratic candidate in your district, well how about just signing on with Ralph Nader and his Green Party slate and see how much representation you get in Congress from your efforts?

Progressives are only 20% of the vote but they seem to be getting too big for their britches.  Democratic Party success does depend on them, but it also depends on sharing the power.  If progressives insist it must be their way or the highway the Republican Party is going to be very successful in picking off moderate voters and winning the elections.

Yes, we need an alliance in the "big tent" (0.00 / 0)
but that doesn't mean we have to be enthused about supposed "Democrats" who vote against us on all the crucial issues, who parrot Republican talking points, and who attack the philosophical foundations of our party (which the vast majority of its Senators and Representatives adhere to and are proud of). Again, I'd say that progressives have better things to do then phone bank, door knock, etc. to Glenn Nye.* Instead, I'd urge them to do that for Tom Perriello and others who are proud to be Democrats and don't spend their time ripping the party down.

*Just as conservative activists have better things to do with THEIR time than to spend their time, talent and money on people they consider to be "RINOs".

Liberal points (0.00 / 1)
Crucial issues?  I think you are speaking about progressive issues.  If you do not get everything you want?  You are unsatisfied and unwilling to share the Democratic Party leadership as long as you are deprived of what you want.

Well I have news for you progressives, you do not own the Democratic Party.  You are only 20% of the populace and that makes you a minority.  You need to bow the knee to moderates because if you insist it go the other way?  Too many moderates will vote for the Republicans.

Get real progressives, you need to win elections.  You are in minority even in your own party, as long as your party continues to win elections.  When the Democratic Party becomes pure according to your standards, few elections will be won.

[ Parent ]
Global Warming Denier and Homophobe (1.00 / 1)
First off am I a homophobe?  Guilty as charged I guess and it is a label I'll wear with pride.  I support society's encouragement of monogamous, heterosexual relationships.  I have analyzed the arguments of the pro-gay marriage issue and found them to be less then persuasive.  However I do not think this is the thread to argue about that.  Glenn Nye voted for ending of DADT (Don't Ask Don't Tell) and as a retired veteran I support his vote.  I believe in tolerance but not encouragement.

Am I a global warming denier?  I think that is the wrong description.  Calling me even a skeptic would be incorrect.  I agree global warming is happening, however I still have questions as to whether green house gas emissions are the sole cause.  Look at Mars.  The CO2 ice caps on Mars are melting at the same time our planets H2O ice caps are melting.  Why are both planets suffering from similar occurrences at the same time?   If green house gas emissions are the sole cause of Earth's warming how does that explain what is happening on Mars?  I do generally support efforts to reduce green house gas emissions because I accept these emissions are part of the problem; however I question if these steps alone will be enough to solve it.  I believe those of you who think the solution is that easy are fools.  Look at Mars and please include an explanation for what is happening there in your thinking.

Sorry for the double post (1.00 / 1)
Sorry for the double post, I intended to include this in the previous.  I am not a moderate?  Well you seem to think of me as a conservative, but conservatives accuse me of being a liberal.  That is why I describe myself as a moderate.  I am neither hard core left or right, I'm somewhere in the middle.

[ Parent ]
These words are utterly meaningless (0.00 / 0)
when they're used the way you're using them.  Same thing with your laughable, false dichotomies and analogies such as the Mars one above. Sorry, I have better things to do than waste my time engaging with this rot.

Can't explain Mars (0.00 / 1)
So, you can't explain why Mars' CO2 ice caps are melting then?  Just a fact but you have a problem with dealing with the facts then I guess.  Facts are pesky when you are agenda driven.  Hopefully most scientists will not adorn themselves with the blinders you sport.
