Glenn Nye's New Ad Attacks Democrats, Misleads on "Wall Street Bailout" Vote

by: lowkell

Wed Aug 25, 2010 at 12:24:56 PM EDT

Uh, just a few problems with this ad (higher-quality version here): 1) attacking fellow Democrats - including Mark Warner, who's doing a fundraiser for Nye this evening, I'd point out - for voting "aye" on the "Wall Street Bailout" and also "aye" on health care reform, is not cool; 2) claiming to have voted against the health care bill because it "cost too much," when in fact the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said it cut the deficit by $1.3 trillion over 20 years, is fundamentally dishonest; and 3) claiming to have voted against the "Wall Street Bailout," when that vote actually took place in October 2008, BEFORE Nye was elected, is really really not cool. As Virginia Young Democrat Kristin Smith writes:
Why is Glenn Nye saying he voted against the Wall Street Bailout in his new TV ad when he wasn't even in office yet? Also, why does he keep insinuating that he's an "independent voice"? Nye stop backing away from the Democratic party before I back away from you
In general, I'd say that attacking members of your own party - and undercutting those fellow party members' talking points - simply because you're desperately trying to save your own skin, is not acceptable. But that's exactly what Glenn Ney is doing here. It needs to stop, immediately.

UPDATE: On Nye's supposed vote against the "Wall Street Bailout" (which, while unpopular, almost undoubtedly prevented a complete economic meltdown in the fall of 2008), perhaps he means this "symbolic" vote, which was "rendered...moot" by the Senate's defeat of "an identical resolution" (with Webb and Warner both voting "nay," by the way). So, technically Nye can say he "voted against the Wall Street Bailout," but only on a meaningless, symbolic vote long after the "bailout" was already signed into law by President Bush, and also after the U.S. Senate had already defeated an identical bill.

This just reinforces my view of Nye (4.00 / 1)
Do I hope he wins re-election?  Yes.

Will I help him win re-election?  No.

How will I sleep if he loses his bid for re-election?  Just fine.

Well, the first 19 secs. was good.... (0.00 / 0)

Actually, the first 16 seconds (0.00 / 0)
then he says he "took on Congress," which is completely garbage. How the hell did Glenn Nye "take on Congress?"  By voting against a pay raise? Wow!

Follow me on Twitter.

Isn't It Sad... (4.00 / 1)
when a Democrat feels he has to demonize other Democrats to get re-elected? Granted, Nye wouldn't be in Congress if President Obama hadn't had the best GOTV that Virginia has ever seen for Dems in a couple of generations, but what a crappy way to show your thanks.

At least Tom Perriello, who also got elected in a district that is basically Republican, has the fortitude to stand by his votes and to engage, not pander to, those who differ politically.

That said, Nye sure is better than Thelma Drake. I hope he gets another term.

With his vote against health care, the jobs bills and others, he really isn't any better than Thelma Drake. (0.00 / 0)
His district is a R+5, just like Perriello, but his voting record is abysmal.

good bye and good riddens.

Sorry... (0.00 / 0)
but the type of GOPer who is now running means that any lousy Dem is better than that.

I don't normally take much stock into ideological rankings... (4.00 / 1)
but Progressive Punch has Nye as the fifth least progressive Democrat in the House, coming in above only Bobby Bright, Travis Childers, Gene Taylor, and Walt Minnick. Great company he's in.

The problem is that Democrats have a finite amount of money to spend on the midterms, so they need to maximize the return on it. Why should they drop lots of cash in a none-too-cheap media market like Hampton Roads to prop up Nye when the money could be used elsewhere to protect more reliable members of their caucus?

That's how I see it (4.00 / 1)
Right now, Scott and Moran are very safe.  Boucher is pretty solid.  Connolly, he has some competition so he needs Dem assistance.  Perriello may be at a disadvantage but has remained true to cause.  Nye is a douche.

So, the way I see it, Dems in the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th should support their guy with 100% of their time and donations and not worry about the other races.  Dems in the 3rd and 8th should probably go 50 of time, effort and money on their guy and the other 50% helping out Connolly, Perriello and maybe a little to Boucher.

People in the 1st, 4th 7th and 10th do have a candidate to support as well, although none of those seats are doable.  Still, invest 50/50 just to build up the home team.

People in the 6th should pretty much move, but in the meantime, they should give everything they can to Boucher, Perriello and Connolly.

Support Connolly if you want the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy extended. (0.00 / 0)
Support Connolly if you oppose jobs bills.

Support Connolly if you're more worried about deficits than the unemployed.

Support Connolly if you think the retirement age should be raised and Social Security benefits should be cut.

Or you could support a Democrat.

We know you don't like Gerry.  We know you don't like Mark Warner.  Now, will you please shut the fuck up and not post your usual drivel anytime any of us mention either of them?  They're both pretty popular with mainstream Dems and lot of independents.

Guys like you do very little good for the party as you're the Dem equivelant of teabaggers - 100% pure or no go.  Zero pragmatism.  I'm sure that you've supported far more losing candidates over the years than winning one.  Wonder why?

There's a tiny sliver of area in the left-middle where a Dem can be "impure" in the eyes of the self-rightous such as yourself but still supportable.  For many of us, that's about as liberal a Dem as we would want.  There's a fairly broad area in the middle where pragmatic Dems, i.e. successfull ones, can select from.  On almost all accounts, even from some of the diehards in the 2nd, Nye has fallen outside of that pragmatic zone.  Periello hasn't, Connolly certainly hasn't.  But, to guys like you, you can't see the forest for the trees and in your hatred, you spew stupidity.  You were probably a Byrne supporter in the 2008 primary, which to the reading public should answer most questions about you.

Now, has Boucher?  If you just look at his votes on big issues, probably so.  But, if you look at the district he represents, he's way more liberal than 60-70% of the people down there, maybe even more.  So, he gets a big pass from most of us due to his circumstances.  Nye, of course, doesn't.

I have to disagree (4.00 / 1)
Defeating conservative Dems at least gives you a chance to replace the Republican with a better Dem.  Better than Nye for life.

Are you kidding me?  Have you ever been to Virginia Beach?
