Republican AG nominee Ken Cuccinelli attempts to respond to charges that he is too far to the right politically. Unfortunately for Cooch, he can talk all he wants about attempting to confuse people, but the truth is that he IS too far to the right politically and out of the mainstream. The only question is, will voters figure that out before election day, or will Cooch's attempt to "confuse them" work?
I think listening to this guy more and more just motivates me to work hard to get Steve elected, plain and simple. I'm very curious to see how Mike Henry runs this campaign now that he has come in. They said he officially starts on Monday but he's already gotten involved going after Cooch's votes regarding DWI legislation. I know this will be a much more difficult race than the Warner-Gilmore race last year. Cooch's people are VERY good at painting him in the less-than right wing extremist he really is. Make me want to puke my guts out.
But, Cooch definitely did a good job getting ahead of Steve on this issue but I believe it was because the campaign was going through the transition. I doubt it will happen again, in fact I know it won't happen. I got another compass and he is still looking for volunteers and money which makes me curious to see how much money he has when the numbers come out. He's always been a weak fundraiser and has benefited against weak opponents who haven't run the smartest campaigns so we have to see how this is going to be played. I have no doubt that Mike Henry will have a game plan to get Steve back in the game.
There are two equally important things to remember here. First, don't underestimate the Cooch's ability to "have it both ways." Next, don't forget to always compare the ways that Steve Shannon is the better candidate
First, the part about not underestimating Ken Cuccinelli, somebody with whom I've had a few dealings over the years.
He can seem to be a perfectly reasonable, likable, and acceptable candidate during an appearance on television. He has a way of both acknowledging his strong socially conservative beliefs and at the same time minimizing their importance to moderate voters who don't agree with those views. Here's the way he operates:
He gives a wink and a nod to his socially conservative base, which knows how hard he actually will fight to implement those views.
At the same time, he provides reassurance to moderates, who disagree with him. He does this by admitting openly that he is a social conservative. At the same time, he seeks to soothe the fears of moderates by telling them not to be concerned about that fact because they should focus instead on all the other things on which he agrees with them. By doing that two-pronged acknowlegement, he comes across as sincere, trustworthy, and reasonable.
The best way to fight that is to show some of the stranger video clips that don't make it on to mainstream television and to examine his record for all the bills he's sponsored and votes he has taken that are clearly out of the mainstream. The real key to opposing him is to hold him to his actual voting record.
At the same time, it's important to constrast how Steve Shannon is not only a mainstream candidate, but also has solid experience as a prosecutor and how he will be a better attorney general.
Just going after Cuccinelli is only half the equation. Explaining why Steve is the better candidate is the other, equally vital, half.

Back in January 2005, when I started a little blog called "Raising Kaine," people scoffed at the concept that Virginia would turn Democratic "blue," let alone Progressive "blue," anytime soon. Well, four years later, Democrats controlled both U.S. Senate seats, 6 out of 11 House of Representatives seats, the State Senate, and the governor's mansion. Goal #1 should be to keep it that way. Goal #2 should be to expand our majority. Goal #3 should be to elect not just MORE Democrats but BETTER Democrats, more Progressive Democrats. Along those lines, I want to state categorically that, even more than a Democrat, I consider myself a Progressive in the tradition of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Tom Paine, Teddy Roosevelt, JFK, RFK, and Jim Webb. As such, I believe in expanding opportunities to all, utilizing government as a tool to promote the general welfare and the common good, protecting the environment for ourselves and for future generations, and expanding the rights promised in our Constitution and Bill of Rights to all Americans.
This blog is not intended to be a replacement for Raising Kaine, or RK as it came to be known. It is simply my personal blog, where I can write whatever moves me at a particular moment. The focus will be Virginia politics, but expect to see diaries here on national and even international events, particularly - but not only - as they affect Virginia. Finally, while I begin this blog as the sole author, I do not exclude the possibility of inviting other principled, pragmatic Progressives to join me at some point. And, of course, I invite everyone to comment here, but please be aware that profanity, personal attacks, bigotry, and "trolling" are not allowed. Thanks, and enjoy!

What a great clip! It's (almost) macaca-like. Let the clip rip...
